Solutions for Towing Forest River Roo Travel Trailer and Carrying Bikes Simultaneously
Question:
Hi, I have a 2004 Toyota 4 Runner V 8 I think it is 4.7 L and also I have 22 ft 2007 Forest River Roo. Last year I put three bicycles on the back of the trailer. The trailers bumper was torn down due to the weight of bicycles and perhaps the bicycle rack. Luckily, only the bicycle tires and rims were damaged. At a campground I saw an individual with the 2-bicycle rack attached to an extender between their truck and trailer hook-up. I was wondering if you have seen something like this or do you sell it? Thank you.

There are a few different options that might work for you. A towing bike rack can be a good option depending on the tongue weight of your camper. The Curt # C18013 used in conjunction with an extra long ball mount like # 2736 or # D-28 (choose the one with the rise or drop you're needing) might be a good option, but keep in mind that the tongue weight capacity of the hitch would be reduced by the weight of the rack and the bikes. For instance, say the three bikes weigh 100 lbs. The rack weighs 13 lbs. Your hitch has a 400 lb tongue weight capacity. In this example, carrying the rack and the bikes would reduce the hitch tongue weight capacity to 287 lbs, so you might want to take a look at the help article I've linked to that explains how to determine the tongue weight of your camper.
Another option would be a multipurpose ball mount like the Curt # D210.
A third option would the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk, part # CC-275 would allow you to carry a combination 100 lb of bike/carrier weight on the trailer tongue.
