Hand Winch Recommendation to Lift a Cab Off a Tractor in a Garage

Question:

What winch do you sell that meets these requirements: Lift 500 pound tractor cab with hook that would attach to OEM lift sling, so top of cab is nearly 11 feet off the floor, then we move tractor out from under the cab and then reverse the winch, so cab is gently brought back down and placed on a pallet lying on the floor where cab had previously been. Winch must be mounted on wall four feet above floor and be able to hold enough cable to run 9 feet up wall, over a swivel and 7 feet to center of garage ceiling, over another swivel and then straight down 11 feet for a total of at least 27 feet of wire cable on the hub. Must operate smoothly and with precision, have reliable auto locking ratchet, and be able to easily reverse direction while under 500 pound load so after lifting cab up off tractor, cab can then be gently brought bak down to a pallet positioned on the floor where the tractor had been before removing the cab, all the while able to securely hold the 500 pound cab for several minutes. Winch would only be used twice per year, but wjem used MUST operate with precision and safety and be able to reverse direction while under 500 pound load..

The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Winch, # DL11001, is just the winch you are looking for. A worm gear winch is great for smooth controlled raising and lowering and the reel will automatically stop when you stop cranking, whether you are lowering or raising the tractor cab. You can also move from raising to lowering without having to adjust a pawl or ratcheting lever. There is no freewheel option with a worm gear winch, so you will not have to worry about the cable releasing and dropping the cab.

With this winch, you can use a 5/8 inch socket so you do not have to manually crank the winch if you do not want to and it can hold up to 49 ft of 9/32 inch diameter steel cable. I recommend using the Dutton-Lainson 50 ft Winch Cable, # DL24104, and cutting it down to the appropriate length. The weight capacity of a winch decreases by 10 percent for each layer of cable on the drum, so cutting the cable down to the appropriate size would retain the highest weight capacities. At 2,000 lbs, this winch should work great for your 500 tractor cab, even with some cable layers on the drum.
