Do Hitch Extenders Reduce Capacity by 50 percent Regardless of Length

Question:

I just read your information on the 50 rule for extenders. Do it matter how long the extender is? It is the same for a 8 inch or 18 inch extender?

Expert Reply:

50 percent is the general rule of thumb for hitch capacity reduction when using a hitch extender. An 8 inch extender would put less leverage on a hitch than an 18 inch extender, but instead of getting super particular with the percentage versus the length the 50 percent figure is used as it is the most common amount of capacity reduction.

The reduction also considers the additional movement in the hitch accessories that can put even more strain on the hitch.

The 2 inch to 1-14 inch hitch reducer # HT02 that you referenced does not reduce any capacity.
