What Weight Distribution Sway Control for 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Towing Fleetwood Camper

Question:

Ive browsed through the expert answers, but couldnt find anything related to my application. I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimted that is suspension lifted to 6inch The tow vehicle height is not my concern. Im looking for a Weight distrubution system with sway control to install on a 2008 fleetwood evolution 3. Ive noticed that the A frame has two frames attached. What system would accomidate this frame? My second concern is with the WDH hooked up, is there any issues with driving off highway? My theroy is, that the WDH will attempt to stay level if im driving on a country road or trail. My trailer tonge weight is 400lbs dry and possibly up to 800lbs with the front bed loaded with camping supplies. I notice only a slight squat when hooked up, and not much sway. Im looking to ensure I dont end up all over the roads when I go cross country if winds are high.

Thank you for submitting the photo of your lifted 2007 Wrangler Unlimited and your 2008 Fleetwood Evolution 3 pop-up camper.

Generally speaking, weight distribution systems with sway control are not desirable when the vehicle and trailer will be taken off-road. When driven on uneven surfaces, such as a bumpy or pitted dirt road, the stiffness of the friction sway control system may lead to erratic handling in the tow vehicle. Because it prevents free movement of the trailer in relation to the tow vehicle, a sway control system could cause unpredictable forces to be applied to the tow vehicle, possibly affecting steering and braking performance. In your case it is recommended that when you would be about to leave paved roads you jack up your trailer to release the tension on the spring bars and remove them from the system for the low-speed off-road portion of your travel.

As you have noted, the equipment on your Fleetwood camper does not offer the usual unobstructed access to the nose of the trailer A-frame. Your tool box, propane tank and cargo bin all appear to be very close to the frame locations where the spring bar brackets of a weight distribution/sway control system usually mount.

Reese offers a solution with their bolt-on hangers, part # RP58305, that can be used along with a system such as the Reese 1,200-lb-rated # RP66542.

Since you indicate that your towing set-up exhibits only slight rear-end sag and not much sway, and since your pop-up does not present the same large surface area for wind turbulence as a 5th wheel or other large trailer, you may be well-served by doing some further towing to test the performance of this combination before deciding whether or not you need weight distribution and sway control.
