Trailer Hitch w/ Best Ground Clearance for a 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness

Question:

I am getting a 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness, their new model with additional lift, etc. Ive installed your Curt C67JR on a 2021 Outback and it is a straight forward installation, I use it to pull a Taxa Cricket Popup, about 2,250lbs. I got my hitch and wiring from you. My questions- Will that hitch work with this new sub-model? How much will it effect the departure angle? Are there better hitches that wouldnt hurt the departure angle. Towing that kind of weight should I get new rear springs? Any other recommendations for me?

According to Curt, the # C67JR Class III hitch is compatible with all models of the 2022 Subaru Outback, including your Wilderness model.

I don't have specifics about the departure angle, but as you can see in the photo I provided and the linked installation video, when we installed the # C67JR on a 2021 Outback, the receiver tube butted right up against the underside of the bumper fascia. If you measure down 3 inches from the underside of your bumper fascia, that will be the lowest point of the hitch. This hitch would sit in the same spot as the Curt.

The other available hitches would sit a bit lower and would have more affect on ground clearance and departure angle.

With a 3500 lb towing capacity, you should be good to go without a transmission cooler. Your vehicle has a CVT transmission which lacks the lines from the transmission to the radiator that a cooler would tap into.

Chances are that the 250-300 lb tongue weight of your pop-up won't cause much in the way of sag in the vehicle's rear suspension, but if it does you can use the Coil Sumo Springs, part # CSS-1125R. The Coil SumoSprings install between the coils of your rear springs which will prevent most of the sag caused by a trailer's tongue weight. The springs are pliable, so they'll provide support but will have some 'give' so your ride quality won't go out the window.

You'll also need a trailer wiring harness like the Curt # C56040, a ball mount like # D-4, Hitch Pin and Clip, # PC3
and a trailer ball like part # 19260 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 63845 for a 2 inch ball.

I've linked to some installation videos that you might find helpful.
