Correct Weight Distribution Hitch for Trailer With 7,000 lb GVWR
Question:
Hi! I just received my Husky Centerline TS 600-800 8000lb weight distribution hitch. We just traded from an RPod to an Imagine XLS 22MLE. Tongue weight 490. Dry weight around 5200, and GVWR of 7000 or so. I just wanted to double check your thoughts on proper hitch. Is the 600-800 tongue weight range of this hitch too much? Should we bump down to the 400-600? I was afraid wed need the extra towing weight capacity since the 400-600 tongue weight hitch maxes at 6000 lbs towing capacity. Otherwise, is this a good hitch for our application? Thanks.

The Husky Center Line Weight Distribution with Sway Control 32217 is for 600 lb to 800 lb total tongue weight capacities (the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle), and instead of it being too heavy, it may actually not be rated quite high enough.
The reason for that is tongue weight is generally 10% to 15% of a trailer's GVWR, so a trailer with a 7,000 lb GVWR, even if the tongue weight was just 11-1/2% of the GVWR the Husky would not be rated high enough and would essentially be of no use. The only way to know for sure is to weigh your tongue weight with a scale like the etrailer Tongue Weight Scale # e99044.
The better option for a high-quality weight distribution hitch is the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution with 2-Point Sway Control - Round # FA94-00-1000 or Trunnion # FA92-00-1000.
Not only is the Fastway considered to be the best of the more economical sway control hitches, it has a wider range of capacities, with the aforementioned options being for total tongue weights between 600 lbs and 1,000 lbs, which your trailer will assuredly be in. This doesn't come with a hitch ball like the Husky, so depending on your coupler size you would need the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # EQ91-00-6100 or 2" Hitch Ball # EQ91-00-6080.
So if you know your total tongue weight and you're at 750 lbs or so, then stick with the Husky, but outside of that I recommend going with the Fastway - Round # FA94-00-1000 or Trunnion # FA92-00-1000.
I have added some links below to video reviews for you to check out as well.
