To determine if the Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier will fit on your 2012 Highlander, you will need to take a measurement off of your hitch.
Measure the distance rearward from the hitch pin hole until the furthest rearward portion of the bumper is cleared. If this measurement is less than the 4 inch hitch pin hole to basket measurement of the Carpod Carrier, it will fit. This being said, I would not recommend using it unless your measurement was 3 inches or less, to allow an inch space between the bumper and the carrier. Since the basket is so close to the rear of the vehicle, if the carrier clears the bumper, the liftgate would almost certainly NOT clear the basket.
If you find that the carrier will not have enough clearance to fit your Highlander, we have several different carriers that might work better for you. The Carpod # M2205 offers a longer shank that would certainly fit your vehicle, but once again, would not allow the liftgate to be raised.
The Reese 24x60 Cargo Carrier, part # 63153 offers 12-3/4 inches of clearance between the hitch pin hole and carrier, and should allow the liftgate to open when nothing is placed on it. When loaded, the ability of the liftgate to clear will depend on the height of what is loaded onto it.
