Parts Needed to Add 7-Way to 2012 Ford Explorer Limited with 4-Way

Question:

I have a 2012 Ford Explorer Limited that has a factory hitch and 4 point wiring harness installed. The car did not come with the tow package from the factory and was added afterwards by the dealer. I would like to add a 7 point wiring harness in addition to the factory 4 point harness. Its not important to me at this point to hook up the brake assist. I looked under my car and I can see the connectors that matches this harness. To me this looks like the best option for adding a 7 point harness. Is there another choice that you would recommend over this one?

Since you have the square connectors on your 2012 Ford Explorer the easiest solution to add a 7-way is the part # 118272 that you mentioned. For a more cost effective solution though we have the # 37185 that allows your current 4-way to plug in and gives you a 7 way and 4-way solution you can easily mount at the rear of your Explorer.

If I installed part # 118272 would enabling the brake assist feature be easier in the future? I notice with # 37185 to enable the brake assist functionality wires would need to be run to the battery.

The T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # 118272 is only a fit for the factory tow package. If you don't have the tow package, then you can tap into the brake controller output wire in the harness and run a wire to the brake controller. You will also need to add the power wire the same way as those two components do not come pre-wired for easy connection. You will need to do the same thing you would for the # 37185. I recommend using kit # ETBC7 for this application if you will be hard-wiring a brake controller. If instead you want to use a wireless brake controller like the Curt Echo # C51180 then you can just add the power wire to your battery to give power to the trailer plug and avoid the brake controller output wiring using # ETBC7L.
