Recommended Weight Distribution For Small Enclosed 2700 lb Trailer

Question:

I have a 7X12 enclosed single axle trailer, GTW of 3500 #, that I will be pulling behind a 2012 Ford Edge SEL, which has a curb weight of about 4800 #. The trailer weighs 1600 and I will be hauling a trike weighing 1115 #, so expected total gross will be under 3000. The Edge has a 3500 # rating. Do I need a WD hitch, and which would you recommend? Tongue weight will likely be under 500 #, more like 300.

Anytime the trailer's weight will be greater than half the weight of the vehicle, using a weight distribution hitch is recommended. Having the trailer's tongue weight compress the rear suspension of the vehicle unloads the front suspension which throws off the aim of your headlights and can negatively affect braking and steering performance.
If the hitch on your Edge is rated for weight distribution (check the capacity on the sticker placed on the hitch. It should list a GTW and a Weight Distribution rating) I'd recommend you use a system.

A trailer's tongue weight is typically 10 to 15% of the weight of the trailer, which would put your tongue weight in the neighborhood between 250 and 400 lbs. For a reasonably priced and easy to use system that provides proven weight distribution along with excellent sway control reduction, I'd go with the Fastway # FA92-00-0450. Smaller SUV's like the Edge due to their wheelbase that's smaller than a full size truck or SUV tend to be more susceptible to trailer sway caused by cross winds and oncoming or passing traffic. Having a good performing sway control component to the system you're using is important. Plus, the taller sided enclosed trailer will do a good job of catching the wind. This system is compatible with trailer tongue weights ranging from 100-450 lbs, so it's the perfect fit for your trailer. For a 2 inch hitch ball, I'd recommend part # 40038.

The # C17322 system you looked at is a good weight distribution system, but it's rated for up to 1000 lbs which means it wouldn't be very effective on your trailer with its lighter tongue weight, and you'd also have a very rough ride. The sway control component is nowhere near as effective as the Fastway system I recommended.

I've linked you to a demonstration and an install video featuring the Fastway system I mentioned.
