Brake Controller for Motorhome to use With Car Hauler Trailer
Question:
Hello I have been towing a Honda CRV with your equipment for the last three years and have decided to make the move to a car hauler trailer honest it is not all my gear that requires a trailer. I currently have a seven pin plug with standard wiring less trailer brakes as I had a Patriot unit for the Honda. Could you point me to a recommended controller and wiring kit to install in a diesel pusher? The one concern I have is that the exhaust brake activates the brake light so which wire do I use for the trigger wire on the controller so that the trailer brakes do not activate every time the brake lights come on? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The best brake controller for your situation is the Prodigy P3 # 90195; it is the most popular model we carry due to its effectiveness and ease of use. It will activate your trailer's brakes immediately in proportion to your motorhome's brakes and offers three different boost levels so you can adjust your braking power.
When wiring the P3 on your motorhome with an exhaust brake that does activate the brake light you do need to test to find out if there is power on the brake switch wire that the brake controller taps into when the exhaust brake is activated. If there is power, use Diode # RM-690 and install it between the brake controller and where it taps into the brake switch to avoid backfeeding power to the controller.
With a 7-way you will need to use 10 gauge wire # 10-2-1 and 30-amp circuit breaker # PK54530; you will need to wire your hot lead through your circuit breaker.
I have added a number of help articles on wiring brake controllers for you to check out which should be helpful as well.
