Parts Needed to Install a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller on a 2001 GMC Savana 2500
Question:
My van has the hookup back in the jack storage so I believe I can attach 118240 and Im planning on getting ETBC7 so I can hook up a 7 connector plug but Im wondering if this van has a plug up near the emergency break so I can hook up a break controller or am I just going to need to pigtail it onto existing wires?

The brake controller and wiring options for a 2001 GMC Savana can be tricky. If you have a bundle of wires in the jack storage compartment, I would ask that you test them for function using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 and label them.
If you find that you have 7 wires (left turn/brake, right turn/brake, running lights, 12-volt power, reverse lights, brake controller output, and ground) then you can use the Pollak 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket, # HM40975 and Pigtail Wiring Harness, # PK11998, and connect the blunt cut wires according to function to the wiring in the jack storage compartment.
The Pigtail Wiring Harness has the following configuration:
Red - Left Turn and Stop
White - Ground
Blue - Electric Brakes
Green - Right Turn and Stop
Black - Battery - 10 gauge
Brown - Running Lamps
Yellow - Backup Lamps
The brake controller will need to be hardwired. You will connect the blue wire to the blue wire near the emergency brake pedal. The white wire will connect to the negative battery terminal. The black wire will connect to the positive battery terminal via a 20 or 30 amp circuit breaker, # PK54520 or # PK54530 (see brake controller instructions for which size to use). The red wire will connect to a wire on the brake switch that shows a signal ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed. You will need about 10 to 20 feet of wire # 10-1-1.
But it may be easier to do a complete hardwire since there is no simple plug and play connector for a brake controller under the dash. You will need the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118377. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a video showing a typical installation for you.
You would then use the 4 and 7 Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7. This will add a 7-Way and it also has all the wiring needed to install the brake controller. I have included links to an FAQ and a video that explain how to install an ETBC7.
