Towing Equipment For 2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen & 2015 Subaru Crosstrek
Question:
We have a 2015 Subaro Crosstrek and a 2015 VW Golf wagon...is there any difference in towing capability/capacity/cost to install the hitch? we are only pulling a sail boat and trailer...total combined weight, less than 700lbs. Any input greatly appreciated.

According to my research the 2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen towing capacity is around 2000lbs and the 2015 Subaru Crosstrek has a towing capacity of 1500 lbs. Please confirm with your respective vehicle's owners manual before proceeding. In this situation I would go with the car that has the highest towing capacity, which appears to be the SportsWagen, but I will give towing options for both.
For the 2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver 1-1/4" # 24949. There is no drilling required for installation and underbody panel(s) and/or fascia must be temporarily loosened or removed. This install requires temporary removal and trimming of bumper/fascia during installation.
Since your trailer has lights you need Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C59236. The recommend drawbar is # 3590. The recommended 2 inch hitch ball is # 19258.
For the 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch 2" Receiver # 76084. There is no drilling required for installation and the exhaust must be temporarily lowered for installation.
Since your trailer has lights you will need a 4-way Flat Trailer Connector # 118467 for non-hybrid models. The purpose of this item is to control and allow the basic hookup of the three lighting functions (running, turn, and brake lights) plus one pin is provided for a ground wire. Most standard light duty trailers will use a 4-pole flat connector. This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your wiring harness, which is located behind the driver side trim panel. You may have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area. On Hybrid models use # C56243, the Plug-In Location is Behind driver and passenger side tail lights externally .
The etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches 7,500 lbs # 989900 is an excellent product to consider for the Crosstrek. It includes two ball mounts, two hitch balls and pin & clips. If your hitch or trailer has a different towing capacity contact me back, I can make tailored recommendations according to those specifications.
