What Size Braking Assembly Does a 3,000 Lb Trailer Axle Use

Question:

Hi I have a Jayco z17x camper that needs brakes soon. I know the drums are 10” diameter but unsure about the thickness. I know the brake shoes themselves are 11/2 in wide. Would would the drum thickness be? It says on the axle 3000lb axle. Thanks

Expert Reply:

The overall width of the drum would be around a 1/2" wider than the shoes on the backing plate but this will not be relevant when selecting replacements as the parts will be based on the dimensions of the backing plate which in your case is 10" x 1-1/2". Most 3,000 lb trailer axles use a 10" x 1-1/2" braking assembly with a 4 bolt brake mounting flange like part # K23-472-473-00.

In order to confirm this for you I would need you to provide me with the part number off of your trailer axle or the VIN on your trailer.
