Ford Integrated Trailer Brake Controller Compatibility with Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Brake Assemblies

Question:

I have a 2006 Ford F350 and I have just purchased a 2012 KZ Inferno 3410T Toyhauler. I read in the F350 owners manual The Ford TBC has only been verified to be compatible with trailers having electric-actuated drum brakes one to four axles and not hydraulic surge or electric-over-hydraulic types. I am reading conflicting reports about the TBC working or not working with the Dexter NEV-R-ADJUST ™ Brakes some reports stating that I will need to have a Ford service facility disconnect the TBC and I will need to install an aftermarket brake controller. What are your thoughts? Will the factory installed TBC work with the Dexter NEV-R-ADJUST ™ Brakes, or do I need to use an aftermarket controller? Thanks in advance for your response!

The Ford TBC will work just fine with the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brake assemblies. The Ford TBC really only has issues with Electric Over Hydraulic brake actuators, so we do recommend an aftermarket controller in those instances and an aftermarket controller would then require the TBC to be disconnected. I've attached an article to assist.

For electric brakes, the self-adjusting assemblies have absolutely no bearing on the factory Ford systems. If your trailer has 10 inch brakes, then you will want the 3500 lb assemblies # 23-468-469. If you have 4400 lb axles, you want # K23-478-479.

For 6000 lb axles, you will want # 23-458-459 which are 12 inch brakes. Finally, for 7000 lb axles # 23-464-465.

These assemblies only require adjustment at installation and then will self adjust based on the wearing of the brake shoes. It is a mechanical adjustment as the system moves to keep brake shoe friction on the drum.
