Carrying 2 Kayaks on Front of 09 Dodge When Towing 5th Wheel
Question:
I have an 09 2500 Dodge Quad cab. I tow a 28.5 Jayco RSTS 5th wheel, making the bed unusable for transporting my kayaks. I have a 2inch front-mounted hitch already installed on the truck. Can a load extender work to carry my kayaks. Is it satisfactory in this orientation and what goes on the roof? Can the roof top portion be mounted in the center of the roof or more towards the front? One of my kayaks is shorter than the other. Are there parameters for the rooftop portion of the system? Are there any systems available for my truck-5th wheel combination? I have a 2inch rated hitch on the back of my 5th wheel as well. Thank you.

We have a setup for you that will allow you to carry your two kayaks.
You will need the Rhino-Rack T-Load Hitch Mounted Load Assist and Support Bar for 2" Hitches - 49" Long # RTL002. This is able to install in a 2 inch front hitch like the one on your 2009 2500 Dodge Quad cab. You would also need a Darby single bar roof rack # DTA968 and some Foam Blocks(described below).
For the crossbar, you're able to adjust a little bit, and the instructions will give you information on how to best orient it for your front-load setup. I'd make sure to measure and fit to your smaller kayak, and use additional tie down points for the longer of the two kayaks to make sure that it is as secure as possible.
For the padding, you will need some Malone foam blocks part # MPG158. You'll need to purchase two of these for each kayak.
For tie downs, I recommend two kits of the Thule Quick Draw Tie-Down Ropes w/ Ratchets and Strap Loops # TH855XT and Quik-Loops, part # MPG308. This will let you secure your bow and stern to the vehicle with nylon loops, reducing the risk of damaging the vehicle when the kayaks are being carried, and making it overall easier to complete that process.
I've included video reviews of these parts so you can see their performance for yourself.
