Recommended Base Plate And Other Items Needed To Tow 2008 Jeep Wrangler With Stowmaster Tow Bar
Question:
I have a nice leftover Stowmaster 500 tow bar. Which base plate would mount that to my 2008 wrangler with factory bumper, no winch?

Based on the information you gave, I believe you have a Stowmaster tow bar similar to Item # RM-501. This tow bar is compatible with most Roadmaster vehicle-specific base plates. I would recommend the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit Item # 1429-1. These will fit with the standard factory bumper on the front of your Jeep. If you need safety cables then you can use Roadmaster 68-Inch Coiled cables Item # RM-643. If you have a different bumper on your Jeep then let me know and I will find the correct base plate kit for you.
To flat tow your Jeep, you may want to consider the Quick Disconnect system for Roadmaster tow bars, a wiring kit, supplemental braking systems, and high-low hitch adapters.
The Quick Disconnect system for Roadmaster tow bars consists of both vehicle-side and tow-bar-side parts. Car-side brackets are available as Item # RM-222 and tow bar-side brackets as Item # RM-221. The complete bracket kit that included both vehicle and tow bar Quick Disconnect brackets as well as all hardware is Item # RM-201.
Towed vehicle lighting options range from simple non-invasive plug-in magnetic lights to hard-wire diode kits. Your choice will depend on how much modification you want to make to your Jeep. While more time consuming to install, the Roadmaster Diode Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit Item # RM-15267 is a confirmed fit that is a one time set-up. You will have to disconnect your battery during towing and a quick battery disconnect is Item # RM-766.
Supplemental braking systems are required by law in most states and Canadian provinces. Such systems activate the towed vehicle brakes when RV brakes are applied. The linked article will give you general background and specifics on the various types of systems available which include pre-set, proportional and direct systems. An excellent proportional system is SMI Stay-IN-Play Duo Braking System Item # SM99251. This option is a confirmed fit for your Wrangler and is a one time set-up. It works with your RV's brake lights. Depending on your Wrangler's brake lights, you may need a light switch kit like Item # RM-751452.
When flat towing a vehicle like your Wrangler, you need to keep the RV and the towed vehicle level to the ground. A "safe zone" that ranges from 3 inches above to 3 inches below level can be established with a tow bar adapter. I have linked selections that are available.
Before towing your 2008 Jeep Wrangler, consult your owner's manual for recommendations and suggestions.
