Recommended Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4 Inch Hitch Receiver on 2005 Subaru
Question:
best 1 1/4 hitch for 2005 subaru. I think needs a rise in shank? The videos that demo a few makes it hard to see which moves around the least.. safest? and quietist?

It sounds like you are looking for a hitch-mounted cargo carrier for the 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver on your Subaru.
I recommend looking at the Pro Series 20x47 Cargo Carrier # 63155 for your vehicle. This is a very nice, basket-style cargo carrier that features a mesh floor for easy cleaning and a sturdy steel construction. This carrier does also have a shank rise of 3 inches from the top of the hitch receiver opening which will help increase ground clearance. I recommend adding the Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # e98879 to secure the carrier to your vehicle.
This carrier is compatible with 1-1/4 inch receivers but it might have issues with Class I hitches that have a weld stop to prevent some accessories from going all the way in. If the hitch on your Subaru happens to be a Class I that has the weld stop, I instead recommend the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18110. This carrier has platform dimensions of 47-11/16 inches in length and 19-1/2 inches in width. It also has a shank rise that measures 3-3/4 inches for improved ground clearance.
Both of these carriers will provide a safe and secure fit. To further reduce movement and add stability, I recommend looking at the Curt Trailer Hitch Support Strap # 18050. This will provide extra support by attaching to both the cargo carrier and vehicle. I have included a short video demonstration so you can see exactly how this works.
I have also included video demonstrations on both of the cargo carriers mentioned for you to check out.
