A cargo carrier is a great way to expand your 2005 Mini Cooper R52 Convertible's carrying options.
First, you'll need a hitch. The Mini Cooper R52's for that year only have one confirmed fit, the Curt Class I Trailer Hitch, part # C11126 . This will give you a suitable hitch receiver to carry a range of accessories.
To note, Curt requires that you use a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 to carry all non-trailer loads. Support straps are a good idea as it is, and I've included a video below that shows the difference this strap makes.
Then, you'll want a cargo carrier. I recommend the 20x47 Reese Cargo Carrier, part # 63155. This is a mesh-floor carrier with raised sides that provide a good mix of ease of use and convenience to load and tie down a variety of cargo. This carrier weighs 44 pounds. Please check the tongue weight capacity of your vehicle AND hitch and go with the lowest. Subtract the 44 pounds and that would tell you how much cargo you would add.
Its also worth looking at a carrier bag. This can be useful for the Curt model's flexibility and provide a specific space for carrying small items in either. A bag like the etrailer Cargo Bag # e98990 will allow for you to have a dry space to carry sensitive items. However, In an extremely heavy downpour all bags leak. I would suggest putting all things in plastic that can't get wet.
