Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2016 Mazda CX-5

Question:

Ive got a 2016 Mazda CX5. Im looking at the options for a hitch and am seeing different choices for the 2016.5 and the pre-2016.5 models. Ive reviewed all my purchase documents and associated paperwork, but dont see where I might be able to determine which version I have. Can you offer any counsel? Thanks!

The best way to determine which model Mazda CX-5 you have is to simply visit your local Mazda dealer and provide them with your VIN. They will be able to take this information and tell you exactly what model you have and anything that was installed at the factory.

With that being said, regardless of the model vehicle you have, I recommend going with the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 76138. This Class III hitch will actually fit both the 2016.5 mid-year model and those that were prior to the mid year switch. This is a great hitch that will provide a 2 inch receiver opening and a 4,500 pound towing capacity. The reason I like the Draw-Tite over the Curt alternatives that are also designed to fit your vehicle is because Draw-Tite does not require non-trailer loads such as bike racks and cargo carriers to be supported by additional stabilizing straps with their hitches.

I have included the written installation details and installation videos on both of these trailer hitches for you to check out.

If you plan on doing any towing, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118563 to install a 4-Way connector that will power the trailer's signal lights. The T-One connector will plug directly into existing wiring behind the trim panels in the cargo area on your vehicle. This harness will work with either model of your 2016 Mazda CX-5.

For a ball mount, I recommend looking at the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit # 989900. This kit includes two ball mounts with different rise and drops, as well as the two most common sized hitch balls. I have also included an article that explains how to determine which ball mount is best for your setup and a link that will take you to our available selection.
