Trailer Wiring Harness and Other Parts Needed to Tow a Pop Up Camper with a 2008 Toyota Highlander

Question:

We have a 2008 Toyota Highlander no tow package and would like to pull a hard sided pop up camper we just restored. The camper has a 7 pin connector, but we are not using the extra wires for trailer brakes or auxiliary power. Can I purchase and install a 4 pin wiring harness and just use a 4 to 7 pin adapter to plug the camper into the highlander?

If all you need are the four lighting functions you can use # 118449 on your 2008 Toyota Highlander. Then connect it to your trailer's 7-way connector using the adapter # 30717.

To make it easier to mount the connector on your Highlander use the mounting bracket # 18138 along with the no drill mount # C57202. This way the 7-way adapter will have a clean look on the rear of the vehicle without having to drill into it.

If you don't already have a hitch receiver I suggest the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 75586. This hitch is a Class III designed to fit your Highlander.

If you need a ball mount the Curt # C45030 will fit the Class III hitch. It'll provide either 1 inches of rise or 2-1/4 inches of drop. The 2 inch hitch ball # 63845 or the 1-7/8 inch hitch ball # 19260 will fit. Then for a pin and clip use # PC3.

If the ball mount doesn't provide the rise or drop you need I've linked our selection of 2 inch ball mounts. As well as an article to help you determine the correct rise or drop you'll need with your trailer.
