Should Weight Distribution or Air Bags be Used When Towing with a 2015 GMC Acadia
Question:
I have a 2015 GMC Acadia and will be towing an 18foot open trailer with 2 ATVs and 1 SXS. My trailer has an optional tool box on the front tongue as well. When we load up and go riding, we pack heavily, coolers, gear, spare parts, etc. Ive not yet made a trip with the GMC yet, its a new addition, replacing a Toyota Tundra. My question is, should I add air bags or simply use load distribution bars or should I do both? I never had to worry about this on my Tundra, it handled the loads easily. I dont want to damage the Acadia and want to be sure Im properly leveled and have proper tongue weight.

Between suspension enhancement and a weight distribution system, it's definitely the weight distribution first and air bags second. We recommend a weight distribution anytime your loaded trailer weighs half of what your 2015 GMC Acadia. So the best way to figure out what you need to is to put it all together and weigh it.
The most important factor in picking out a weight distribution system is tongue weight. You can determine your tongue weight by loading your trailer as if you were going to be towing and using a tongue weight scale like # e99044. Another option is taking 10-15 percent of the loaded trailer's weight.
When choosing a weight distribution system you will need the trailer's tongue weight plus the amount of weight that is loaded in the back of the Acadia behind the rear axle. Once you have this number you can pick a system. You want to choose a system that is rated exactly where you need it. Go too light and it will not do its job, too heavy and your ride will be very stiff and rigid.
The Reese Steadi-Flex System is my personal favorite. I have real-world experience with it and it certainly does its job. It uses automotive-style friction pads to prevent sway. Just find the correct system based on the amount of tongue weight you determined your setup to have. For examples, the 400 pound system is # 66557 and the 600 pound system is # RP66558.
For a 2 inch hitch ball that will fit # 63845 and for a 2-5/16 inch # 63847.
