Recommended Wiring to Flat Tow a 2014 Jeep Wrangler 2-Door with 2005 Bounder  

Question:

HI, I just got a 2014 Jeep Wrangler 2 Door that I want to flat tow behind my motorhome. I use to flat tow a Jeep Liberty but that got into a fight with a cement truck and lost. Needless to say the Liberty was already wired and setup to be towed. My coiled BlueOx extension also needs replacing so I was looking at the HM47054 that was recommended in one of your articles. I was also looking at the TM781124 as an easy way to wire the jeep. What I cant find is how a wiring diagram to get the TM781124s 4 wire to the HM47054s 6 wire connector. I assume there is some splicing. I did find the jpg for the 6 wire connector www.etrailer qu146660 but was not able to find any wiring on the 4 plug. I also want to not disconnect the battery when towing if you could recommend some diode. There is also a question on back feed? Where can I find additional information on that? I dont know if I need to worry about it or not. Thanks 2005 35’ Bounder (5k tow limit) 2014 Jeep Wrangler (2 Door to keep the weight down) Blue Ox tow Bar that works great (BX7435 Alexus) Blue Ox Breaking system that still works as well (bx88179). I think they called this a break buddy. Safety cables coiled. These could use the little rubber retainers replaced. Again 10 years old. 10k HiLow hitch that I’m hoping I do not need with the new bumper. What I don’t have: The breakaway switch & wiring. That went with the Liberty. I had a bx88181 switch installed in the liberty and can’t find one. I also don’t know if any other will work. The switch use to plug into the break (bx88179) with 2 banana terminals. Wiring for the break lights/turn signals/running lights. I was looking at the TrailerMate Wiring kit TM781124 & the Tow Bar extension HM47054. These seem to terminate differently at the Jeep connection 4 Flat VS 6 Rnd). It also looks like RoadMaster Diode 7-Wire to 4-Wire kit (RM-15247) would work. That description is the reason for the feed back question below. I DO NOT want anything to do with an electrical problem in the Jeep or the RV. Man those are always a bugger to troubleshoot. I also need a new coiled 7->6 extension (runs from the RV to the toad). Mine works but the rubber wrap is coming undone. Any type of wiring diagram for how to wire this up. I am also looking for information on back feed from whatever harness/wiring and if I need to worry about it with the Jeep. Any help/direction to go in would be great!

I'm glad no one was hurt in the loss of your Liberty's brave fit against the cement truck, but don't worry, I can help you equip your Wrangler with the proper products to get it flat tow ready.

First, I would recommend the Hopkins wiring harness # HM56200 because we've had better luck with them not having issues after installation. This wiring harness has diodes to prevent back-feeding built in but if you wanted to install more we offer # RM-790 or # RM-690. To wire up the 4-way, that this harness provides, to a 6-way you will need to snip off the 4-way end connector and wire it to the 6-way by function and color to the attached diagram. I have linked a video on the 2016 Jeep that at the 9 minute 35 second mark begins to show how repining works. The back of the connector will be the same as the one I've provided, there will be no blue wire and if you wanted to charge your vehicle's battery while towing you will want to run a # RM-156-25 from the center pin (12V Power) to the positive side of the Jeep's battery. I also linked the 2013 Jeep installation video because it show a more detailed approach to the installation of the Hopkins wiring harness.

A wiring umbilical that will give you the 6-way and mounting bracket is the # HM47054 you were looking at, this will work great for your setup.

There are explicit directions on how to prepare your Jeep for Flat Towing on pages 549-553 of your owner's manual. It does mention that the battery be disconnected because it is known that the battery will drain when being flat towed. You can simply install the automatic battery disconnect kit # RM-766 to achieve this. Because your Blue Ox Apollo Braking system uses the 12-volt outlet to power you will also need the # RM-9332 kit.

If you have a monitor in your Bounder you may also want the Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751452. This kit ensures that your supplemental braking system is properly positioned and working effectively. The kit activates your RV monitoring system to alert you when the brakes of your towed car are being applied.

The rubber retainers that need replacing sound like our # BX84-0141. These fit the safety cables like # BX88196 shows.
