What Is Needed To Tow A 3,500 Lbs. Terry Travel Trailer With A 1993 Jeep Cherokee

Question:

We are going to be towing a 1976 Terry Travel Trailer - weight about 3500 pounds for 2000 miles. What type hitch is best to allow the least amount of movement on the road? We have a standard towing ball and what do we need to add? Thanks

You will want to check your owners manual or with the Jeep dealer for the gross towing weight capacity of your 1993 Jeep Cherokee to make sure the towing capacity is not exceeded.

The two Curt hitches will be the hitches with the highest towing weight capacities. The Curt Class III 2 Inch Hitch, # 13160, you have referenced and the Curt Class II 2 Inch Hitch, # 13084, will both have a 5,000 lbs. towing capacity and a 500 lbs. tongue weight capacity. If your vehicle has tow hooks they will have to be removed and if it has a steel skid shield it might have to be removed.

You will also need the Curt Ball Mount, # C45010, and the Pin and Clip, # PC3. You will also need a hitch ball like the Tow Ready 2 inch Hitch Ball, # 19247. If the hitch ball you have has a 2 inch diameter on the ball and 1 inch shank diameter and is rated for 5,000 lbs. or more you can use your hitch ball.

The wiring harness you will need is the Tekonsha Wiring Harness, # 119178KIT. This harness will give you a 4-flat trailer connector in the rear.

The trailer hitch you choose will not change how much movement will be on your trailer when towing. You will want to look at a weight distribution system with sway control to help with movement of the trailer on the road.

The Reese High Performance Reese Weight Distribution System, # RP66558, is designed for tongue weights of 400 to 600 lbs. and a maximum towing weight of 6,000 lbs. This weight distribution system will distribute the weight sitting on the rear of the tow vehicle to all of the axles of the vehicle and trailer. It also has friction sway control which will give enough resistance to reduce trailer sway.

I am sending links to the installation instructions on the two Curt hitches and an information page on weight distribution.
