7-way Wiring Harness for 2014 Ford Explorer to Allow Use of Powered Wheelchair Lift

Question:

I have a 12 pin female connector on a 2014 Ford Explorer. I need to find a male to plug into that. I wont be pulling a trailer but have a very low amp wheelchair lift. Do you have something like that? Even if I end up with the normal 4 pin connector for trailer as long as I have 12 volts. Thank you.

Expert Reply:

The 4-pole harnesses for your 2014 Ford Explorer that has the 12-pin OEM connector, such as Tow Ready # 118540 and Curt # C56172, do not carry a 12V power feed for a trailer, only the basic stop/turn/tail lighting functions.

However, the 7-way kit # C56306 for vehicles with the factory towing package does include a 12V power feed. This too plugs in behind the passenger side rear tire. Please refer to the linked installation video showing a 2013 Explorer. You might care to add the brackets shown in the video, parts # C57202 and # 18138.

You will want to check the power demand from your wheelchair lift to ensure it does not exceed what the car's wiring can deliver. I reviewed the online owner's manual for your Explorer and relay number 12 is the one for the trailer power feed. The manual does not indicate the amp rating but it is usually 30-amps. Take a look at your relay to see what its current capacity is; this will tell you if it can handle the power draw from the lift.

If you prefer you can let me know the brand and model number of your lift and I will contact the manufacturer to see if they can provide its power requirements.
