Recommended Hitch for 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan That Does Not Require Stabilizing Strap 18050
Question:
Im looking at trailer hitches for my daughters 2014 VW Tiguan. I was thinking about the Curt hitch, but I didnt understand the requirement for supporting straps. Where do they go?

Many Curt brand hitches do carry the warranty requirement to use a strap like # 18050 when any non-wheeled load is installed in the hitch, such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. This applies both to their 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch # C12097 and their 2-inch Class III hitch # C13133. The strap can be positioned at the top of the rear hatch, or on other vehicles to one of the raised roof side rails or roof rack crossbars.
Since use of the strap can be a nuisance for some folks, I suggest choosing the etrailer hitch # e98906 since these do not have the strap requirement for their warranties. In general, a 2-inch Class III hitch is a better choice because there will be more accessory items available for a 2-inch hitch than for a 1-1/4-inch.
All hitch options are shown on the linked page and the one I recommend is the 2-inch etrailer hitch # e98906. This hitch includes all required installation hardware. I have linked the written installation instructions as well as an install video.
If your daughter will be towing a trailer she'll also need a wiring harness to operate the trailer's lights. You can use T-One harness # 118675. This installs by plugging in the connectors at the car's taillights and running one single wire up to the engine compartment. An article is linked that will help you with this process. Towing also requires a ball mount like # AMSC2 and a hitch ball that matches the coupler size on the trailer, either 1-7/8-inch # 19260 or 2-inch # 63845. Then a pin and clip # PC3.
If your daughter will use hitch mount accessory items she want to choose 2-inch Class III types that will fit the hitch. I have linked Class III bike racks and cargo carriers for your reference.
