Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2015 Freightliner Coronado with Air Brakes

Question:

I have a 2015 Freightliner Coronado daycab tractor with air brakes and want to pull my 40 ft gooseneck trailer with electric brakes. What do I need to do this?

For your 2015 Freightliner Coronado with air brakes you can still use a regular electric brake controller if you have a brake light wire to splice into. The type of braking system on the tow vehicle will not determine the type of controller you can use. We do however have the Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller # HA100400C which is designed for this application.

A brake controller will have to be hardwired in since there isn't a plug and play harness for your truck. The first thing you would need is a 4-Way trailer connector if the vehicle does not already have any trailer connector. If the truck has brake lights and turn signals on the same bulb you can use # 18252. If the turn signals and brake lights are on different bulbs use # 119178KIT.

Then, to add a 7-Way, if the truck doesn't have one, use # ETBC7. It also includes accessories to hardwire in a brake controller. For a brake controller I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation.

If the truck already has a 7-Way then you will not need ETBC7. Instead you will need wiring kit # 5506 and just follow the relevant parts of the ETBC7 instructions. (Please note that a big rig type of 7-Way does not have the same functions as an RV 7-Way.)

The one issue you might run into is the connection of the red wire from the brake controller to the truck. Many vehicles with air brakes do not have a brake switch wire that you can tap into. If this is the case on your truck then you will need to obtain that signal elsewhere such as the stop light or CHMSL fuse provided either of those is the only component on the fuse.
