Trailer Tires to Replace P235/70-15 Car Tires on a Horse Trailer with Dually Wheels
Question:
We have an old horse trailer that has dry rotted P235 70R15 car tires on it with steel rims. There is plenty of tire clearance for the fenders. The trailer is designed for 2 horses, but plan on only moving 1 horse at a time. Dual Tires on each side. I really dont know what would have been the original tire size for a 2 horse small steel horse trailer. I need some advice on tires and if I should use the existing car rims. Two of the old tires hold air, and two are completely flat after sitting for a few months. Thanks for the info,

You definitely need to replace the tires with trailer tires. Trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall than car tires to handle more vertical load. The steel wheels are pretty much the same as the black steel wheels such as # AM20514 so they are likely going to be fine. The smallest dually wheels we have are 16 inch, # TA56FR, which uses an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern.
On the wheels you have you could likely use a 225/75-15 size which would only be 0.394 inches more narrow and 0.33 inches taller than the car tires on the trailer now. The 225 size will fit on wheels that are 6 to 7 inches wide (inside where the tires sit, not overall width).
In the 225/75-15 size we have 3 different load range options. For a load range C rated for 2,150 pounds at 50 psi use # AM10251. For a load range D rated for 2,540 pounds at 65 psi use # TTWTRTM2257515D. And for a load range E rated for 2,830 pounds at 80 psi use # AM10303.
