Can the sides of the Carpod cargo carrier M2205 be removed to carry larger items?

The # M2205 that you referenced has walls that are removable, but they were not really designed to be easily removed so it might be more trouble than you would be interested in to remove and reinstall them every time you needed to.
A better option for you would be the Yakima EXO Swing Away Enclosed Cargo Carrier # Y62VR9. This carrier has a removable enclosed carrier that would work great for what you are looking for. I attached a review video for more info for you to check out.
You could also consider a flat carrier like the 32x48 Reese Solo Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches - Steel - 400 lbs
