Finding the Correct Size Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter

After backing the vehicle under the trailer, measure from the top of the ball in the truck bed to the base of the pin box on the trailer. This will indicate the height of the adapter that you need.

Convert-a-Ball Collar

Secure Installation

The included collar slides over your fifth-wheel trailer's king pin and is held in place with set screws. Additional, larger set screws that are mounted at the top of the coupler adapter then tighten onto the collar.

Convert-a-Ball Locking Feature

Positive-Locking Feature

This trailer coupler adapter features a simple, secure latching mechanism for safe, easy hookup with the hitch ball. The convenient extension handle grabs the sliding latch so that you can easily lock or unlock the coupler from outside the truck bed. Once the coupler is engaged, hook the handle through the hole in the sliding latch's track to ensure that it remains securely coupled. For extra safety, once the coupler is latched, you can replace the handle with a padlock (sold separately) to secure the trailer to the hitch ball during towing. Use a lock while your trailer is being stored to guard against towaway theft.

Pin Box Length

Note: There are no recommended limits to the length of pin box on which the Convert-A-Ball trailer coupler can be used.

The Product installed with no problem. I just got back from a 900 mi. round trip to Utah. I was in elevations from 1000 ft above sea level to 9000 ft. above sea level. I It hooks up very easy and is very good compared the my old system. I would have given it a Excellent except that it (rotated) turned about 1/4 of an inch.on the king pin as you can see on the Photos. I will be drilling holes in the King Pin Extension and putting in the four bolts before I take it out again. I was suprised that I did not receive the optional bolts nor was I asked if I wanted them. .I did order on line so I accept responsibility for it. At no time did I feel any safty issues.
I had replaced the suspension on my trailer with the easy ride system and combined with your Convert-A-Ball Cushioned System my wife said there was a huge emprovement and I also felt a big difference it the Truck. It is a well engineered product and my raiting will go to Excellent after I put in the four Bolts. You can send me the bolts or I will get my own.
Attached are some photos of my Truck and Trailer.
The Trailer is a 2000 Forrest River Sierra Sport Toy Hauler.
I bought it new.

How do you plan on installing the 4 additional bolts?

Etrailer Expert

Rachael H.

7/29/2014

In the installation instructions Convert-A-Ball discusses the optional installation of additional bolts. However, these bolts are available only for the customer to contact the manfucturer, and are not sold individually. To gain access this is usually done by disassembling the pin box, or by drilling access holes in the plate, but this all depends on the configuration of your pin box, and if this adapter is intended to be a temporary or a permanent solution.

Joe B.

7/17/2015

I did as I said I would do and I drilled four hole in the pin box and installed four bolts. I feel much more confident in the system. I am very happy with it at this time. To drill the holes I removed the pin box and used the adapter for a pattern, I then drilled the holes by hand. 1/2 in Drill

Joe, what is the box length of your Ram?

Joeb

10/26/2015

Raymond L.: My Ram is a 3500 4X4 SRW It has the 8Ft bed. I pulled the same Toy Hauler with two different Quad Cab PUs over the years with 6-12 ft. beds. One 2WD and one 4X4 before this one. I ordered this P/U as a Std. Cab. It is set up like a Laramie inside. towing I get 10-13 MPG. Empty 22 MPG It tows at any speed I want in the Mountains.

I just wanted to tell the folks at etrailer how great of an experance I had ordering from them. I ordered a 5th wheel to gooseneck adapter. From the time the phone rang until Wayne had taken my order was less than 2 minutes. These people know their stuff and the price was great. The install was flawless, fit perfect. I was kept informed several times by e mail what the status of my order was. My order came a day early even during a holiday week.
I am sure glad to have some room in my p/u bed while pulling my 5th wheel.
Thanks Wayne and thanks etrailer

Danny I notice you have a morryde pin box on your trailer. did you change the skid plate over to the morryde RPB77006 gooseneck adapter plate. to use this adapter?

by:

Installation is a breeze. I'm a short but stocky guy so installing it by myself wasn't hard at all. I just lowered the trailer to where I had enough leverage to hold the adapter up and be able to tighten the bolts down with the other hand. Torqued everything down to spec and was on the road in no time. Pulled off after 50 miles and retorqued everything as any good transporter does. This is where my review gets bad. The bolts that hold the adapter to the kingpin couple failed. They crushed on the ends and damaged the threads. Keep in mind, I followed the torque specs TWICE. I didn't have the twisting issues that others have had. It took me 30 min with a pull bar and a piece of pipe to get the bolts backed off enough to get the adapter off the kingpin coupler. Today I spent 30 min working ONE bolt completely out of the adapter and this is what I found. I am in contact with etrailer to get it resolved. The bolts and the inner threads are damaged. Hopefully this is just a lemon and I will get a replacement hassle free. Other than this, this is a great design and towed well.

Great product but the bolt crushing problem is a major one that I am working directly with Convert-a-ball to get fixed. They admit it is on their end and we are working on

by:

I purchased this adapter before the note of not to be used with air ride 5th wheel hitches was added so now I am stuck with a 50lb paper weight. Don’t be me…listen to the notes that are now attached or you will spend a half hour every fuel stop retightening the adapter so you don’t lose your rv enroute.

by:

Easy to install I set the hitch on my jd gator and used the trailer jacks to let down on the hitch. I also bolted the hitch on (just for peace of mind). After install I did a test run of sixty miles. Worked great there was no jerking or push pull motion at all, as some reviews have said.A few months lator we went on a 500 mile trip with no problems. My truck is a 3500 dodge dually diesel. Now I can pull my farm trailers and camper on the same hitch, no moving 5th wheel in and out of truck! My camper weights 13,000 lbs.

by:

Excellent Product! Less than 10 minutes to install. A true quality product, that I am glad I purchased instead of a overpriced hitches that fills up the truck bed and is too heavy for one person to lift.

by:

Put this on a 42' fifth wheel. Moved it from Phoenix to Missouri. Worked perfectly as expected. No issues on many of the curvy/hilly roads on SW Missouri.
I checked it repeatedly, wondering if it would loosen up at all. Nope - everything stayed tight. Thumbs up.

by:

easy to use, & super efficient! works exactly as described. Definitely a handy tool when one of your work trucks go down & you can adapt a different one to move the same trailer. Wonderful tool :)

by:

Very well made adapter. Was reluctant to put on a gooseneck adapter do to the naysayers but I went ahead and purchased one and I couldn’t be happier. I installed the adapter in less than 15 minutes. I did have the needed tools on hand so that most definitely made install much easier. Pulls my 5th wheel perfectly. Highly recommend.

by:

I recently bought a 36ft 5th wheel toy hauler and needed a way to pull it, we didn't really want to install a 5th wheel hitch because we didn't want the extra holes in the bed of the truck so we bought this. I was nervous at first but this hitch adapter work very well. It mounted to the 5th wheel easily and sat right on the gooseneck ball that came built into our truck. It also disconnected from the truck with ease. We have left it hooked onto the camper for now for quick movement if needed.

I am still using the goose neck adapter, I now take it off if my camper is parked for a while just to reduce stress on the front end of the 5th wheel. I would recommend!

by:

This piece is great! I don’t have to drill any more holes in the bed of my truck to install a 5th wheel. Easily installed in about 30 minutes. I will recommend this to anyone that asks. For those looking to get one, here are the tools you’ll need to install: 19mm crowfoot 1/2” drive, 27mm crowfoot 1/2” drive, 3/8” hex 1/2” drive and a 1/2” drive torque wrench. I installed it by myself. I just back the truck underneath and lowered the kingpin down onto the adapter, after installing the kingpin ring.

by:

I want to thank Etrailer for the great customer service I received. Emily H, was very helpful in the process of my purchase. The c5g _1216 converter ball adapter was a very well made and sturdy product. And will handle the 39ft toyhauler that I have it installed on. The installation was very easy and simple. So thanks again Etrailer for a great product and fast delivery, and great customer service.

When I first received it I thought it would work out. But after using it for a couple of months, I had to remove it. The ride quality was terrible and the jerky ride while towing was unbearable. Plus the additional stress it put on the frame of my fifth wheel trailer over time would cause even more problems. So I removed it and installed a Curt fifth wheel hitch and now the ride is much better and smoother with no jerkiness. Would not recommend this adapter at all.

by:

Installation was easy. The product has performed very well. I would recommend this conversion for anyone who needs to convert a kingpin fifth wheel on a trailer to a gooseneck hitch.

by:

Hitch just installed on 5th wheel. I think you should have included a tool for the 3/8" allen screws and the 4 bolts & nuts. I live in a rural area and had to do some serious hunting for the allen screws, which translates to a lot of wasted time. You should put in your instructions to predrill the holes before installing the hitch. Will have to remove hitch to drill bolt holes. Product looks great, will do truck hookup in a couple of days. Don't expect any problems

by:

Hitch goes on easy and works great. It would be great if it came with the permanent mounting as mentioned in the instructions.

by:

Great ADAPTER HITCH!!!! Even though the hitch didn’t call for them, I drilled and installed the 4 bolts, for EXTRA SECURITY, and “Peace of Mind”

by: 08/22/2022

Tech guy was very helpful. Worked as should. Did have to re tighten bolts after first trip Added a bolt to hang safety chains on. Would have preferred different type of hook on safety chain. But all and all just what I wanted and needed at a good price

by:

Researched several products similar to this and this was the best. Received it in a few days. Exactly what I needed for my camper. Installation was easy. YouTube video was very helpful. Will recommend to anybody.

what is distance from rear bumper and lower front of fifth wheel. also it looks like you ,are at a skew with your adapter, is that with all the weight lowered on to the truck. if not how well does it tow like that.

9/21/2015

The space between is about 2-1/2 feet. Plenty of room. That is how my hitch sets fully, its mostly due to me running 315s on my tires. But Ive pulled it all around the south and even up to the Great Lakes. Never once had a problem

thankyou for your answers

by:

I was looking to maximize the space in my bed and didn't want a heavy fifth wheel hitch to move in and out. I reached out to the pros at etrailer and they helped me pick the right setup. I chose to go with the Curt hideaway hitch and the Convert-A-Ball. I couldn't be more happy with their service and fast delivery.

by:

I bought this fifth wheel adapter a year ago when I purchased a 2006 Keystone Challenger camper. It's a bigger camper (35 feet) so I put in the extra bolts right away. I pull it with my 2005 F350 with a chipped 6.0. I check it over before every trip and haven't noticed any wear or loosening. The real test will come in September when will travel from Wisconsin to Glacier.

by:

Watched the tutorial video on installation, 3/4” 8 point socket doesn’t fit the square head bolts. My question…why not just switch to a standard (or metric) bolt rather than square head? I’ve never seen a square torque wrench yet it says torque it to 120.

Etrailer Expert

7/13/2023

You arent alone in finding the bolts frustrating, and I wont say its not a pain. It looks like you need a crowfoot wrench adapted to a torque wrench. I have heard of others using a crescent wrench as well.

by:

Shopped around a bit before finally ordering from etrailer. Price was nearly $xxx lower than everywhere else I've looked, and only took 2 days from order being placed for it to arrive. Exactly what i needed to replaced the coupler that came on damaged on my trailer!

Gooseneck adapter still works great, couldn’t have picked a better product to pull out camper and not buy a 5th wheel hitch

This conversion was awesome starting from the ordering then tracking to the installation and did it by myself (63 yrs old)
I’ll recommend this to all my Rv friends

Fantastic!!! No problems!

by:

This product was a great way to keep the bed of my truck clear by using my flip up goose neck ball to pull my new 5th wheel. I just got back from my first trip pulling through Washington, Oregon, and Idaho and it pulled smooth and great! I had conditions from very hilly two lane roads with 6% slopes to 75mph interstates. I do have to say that the included release lever (the one you can use from the side of the truck) doesnt make any difference because you still have to climb into the truck to remove the chains. Also my truck is a F250 which sits stock a little taller and in the lowest (12") position the trailer rides at an angle up to the truck bed (photo)so a good idea to measure closely before purchase.

by:

Ordered this prior to the arrival of my new Eagle RKS-313. The CAB-C5G was easy to install on the trailer, instructions were straight forward and easy to follow. One season under my belt with a Fifth Wheel, and it's been a Great one. Connect & disconnect are smooth and quick. With the hidden Goose in my Ram 3500, i have ample room for necessities to have a great week/weekend of camping. Very happy with my CAB-C5G!!

  • Could a 2005 Ford F-150 Use a Gooseneck Hitch to Tow a Fifth Wheel Trailer
The big issue is going to be the length of the bed on your truck. If you have a long bed truck then sticking with the gooseneck would be just fine. If you have a short bed you would need to go with a fifth wheel hitch setup since there are slider hitches available that will allow you to make tight turns without cab interference. For a gooseneck hitch for if you have a long bed you would want the part # C60721. This would be all that you need. If you have a short bed you would instead...

Since it sounds like you have a 2013 Ford F-250 short bed with a G and W gooseneck hitch installed like part # BWGNRK1111 your best solution is going to be the B and W Slider Companion part # BWRVK3400. Not only will this not void your trailer warranty...it will give...

  • Can Tow Behind Trailer be Safely Converted to a Gooseneck for Improved Towing and Handling
Converting a pull behind trailer to a gooseneck would not be an easy task and would require a lot of fabrication, if it is even possible. Instead of looking into modifying the 32 ft tow behind RV trailer, I recommend that we take a look at your towing set-up. With the properly rated and adjusted system, there really is no reason that you can't have a comfortable towing experience with a pull behind trailer. The first place that I would start is with your sway control. Since your trailer...

  • Can Gooseneck Adapter for Lippert Turning Point Pin Box for Nissan Titan XD
The Lippert Turning Point pin box actually has a unique pin box mounting bolt hole configuration so it cannot be interchanged with another pin box, like the (discontinued) Reese Goose Box, but I do have an alternative solution for you. If you lockout the Turning Point pin box it then becomes a standard pin box and you can use an adapter like the Convert-A-Ball # CAB-C5G to make it compatible with a gooseneck hitch ball on your Nissan Titan XD. Please note that this will move your pivot...

  • Gooseneck Coupler Adapter Recommendation for Ford F-550 Flatbed with Gooseneck Hitch
How long is your flat bed? Sometimes they are much longer than standard truck beds which means they aren't compatible with fifth wheel towing since the overhangs are big enough. Since you have a gooseneck hitch you probably would be just fine. The only type of adapter we have that would work is the part # CAB-C5G which will bolt onto your pin box and then give you a gooseneck coupler on the Jayco Seismic.

  • Recommended Adapter To Tow Fifth Wheel Trailer With Gooseneck installed In 2013 Chevrolet Silverado
If you have a B&W Turnover Gooseneck Hitch installed in your truck, the best solution is to use a compatible fifth wheel hitch. The hitch I recommend is the B&W Companion, part # BWRVK3500. This slips right into the gooseneck ball hole and features dual jaws that reduce rattle and it has a head that can pivot so that also helps reduce chucking. Using an adapter like # AM3100 or # CAB-C5G will do the job but because they are rigid will not ride as smoothly as the Companion. The Hi-Rise...

  • Recommended Fifth Wheel Hitch For 2001 Ford F-350 With Gooseneck Hitch In Bed
The # CAB-C5G adapter can be used to allow you to tow your fifth wheel with the gooseneck hitch in your 2001 F-350, and is typically used for occasional towing. These adapters are a good solution, but do not provide as nice a ride when towing a fifth wheel trailer with a fifth wheel hitch. If your gooseneck is a B&W Turnover Ball, Hide-A-Goose by Draw-Tite or Reese, or Under-Bed by Bulldog, I recommend the Hi-Rise Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter, part # 9480. This hitch has...
