An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

I was back and forth between Timbren SES and airbags. Everyone in forums were very biased toward air bags and very opinionated on the Timbren SES. Yet I could find one instance in which someone tried the Timbrens, were dissatisfied and then switched to air bags. I called etrailer, Jamie recommended this product to me for my application. Installation on a 20-year-old truck had me nervous, I live in the Midwest and have a lot of salt. Installation was a breeze, and I have a B&W 5th Wheel Hitch (turnover gooseneck ball). This made the install a bit more challenging simply because I had a large bolt through the frame directly above my bump stop nut. If you do this install with the B&W Hitch, get a set of gear wrenches, or borrow a buddies 15mm and 9/16 wrenches. You need the 15mm to remove the factory nut and the 9/16 to install the Timbrens. I sprayed wd40 two nights in a row prior to installation to make sure I had good penetration of oil - I didn't break a bolt or a knuckle. I recommend installing the Timbren spring to the mounting plate, then install the mounting plate with Timbren to the truck. I didn’t need to remove my wheels or my spare, I jacked up the back under the hitch, used jack stands and let the weight of the axle separate the rear end from the truck giving ample room for the installation. After installation, I checked the clearance of the TImbren from the axle and had 1 inch of clearance. I installed my 1200-pound pickup camper and the springs just started touching the axle. I have a 21-foot fiberglass boat and seen about a 1/4-inch drop after I connected it to my truck. These things work and best part is – no maintenance and no danger of shifting weight if an airbag lost pressure or was punctured/damaged. I hunt with this vehicle and drive through thick brush and timber, I feel airbags wouldn’t hold up with the abuse I put my truck through. The Timbren SES system took the squat out of my truck and made the drop from the connection of my heavy boat hardly noticeable. Thank you etrailer, great experience as usual!

Chevrolet Colorado

I put between 50 and 70 thousand miles on my truck every year hauling trailers. After hauling a 32ft trailer from Colorado across Wyoming (with the everpresent cross winds) to Northern California - I saw considerable wear on my new tires. I purchased and installed the Timbren suspension system and made the same trip a week later with another (heavier) trailer. My tires looked like they hadn't worn at all! and the handling was greatly improved - no more sag or sway. Timbren makes a great product that installs easily and performs just like they promise.

Im still driving my slightly modified Ford F250 HD Powerstroke - your Timbren suspension anti-sway bags have been a life saver on my tires! The truck rides level and smooth without sway, even in high winds with my cargo trailers. Handling under heavy loads is also vastly improved. Now if I could only swap the front suspension stops with more Timbren bags the damned factory bumpers are riveted in place!

Ford F-250 Super Duty

Excellent product. I run a farm and after installing them in my F250 I now have them on every truck in the fleet. I would not pull with my F250 before I installed the Timbren suspension system, now I tow 14000 pounds with confidence.

2000 Ford F-250 Super Duty

This was a great addition to our 2000 f250 super duty pickup. I had looked at airbag systems also. The timbres system looked like it would better suit our needs on this truck. Easy and quick install. Takes the toll out of the truck when pulling the gooseneck horse trailer or the livestock trailer. No air lines or mount issues to deal with during installation ( i.e. gooseneck hitch can be issues with air bag mounts). My wife uses this truck and I did not want her to be a long way from home and have to find parts and r shop to work on an airbag system, Timbren solved that. I would positively recommend them depending on the situation

2012 Ford F-250 Super Duty

I have a 2002 F250 with a 4in. lift. Added this based on another friend of mines experience with them. He has a 2012 3/4 ton dodge and with these it doesn't squat his 5th wheel hardly at all. I'm actually picking up my 5th wheel today. So we'll see how they do. As far as install, it was a breeze. From start to finish, including clean up, right at an hour!!! With the 4in lift I had to use the spacer, which put the springs right where they needed to be. I will update in the next couple day once I see how the do with a load. But shipping was excellent. Had em overnighted and that's exactly what I got. Would definitely recommend yall to all my buddies.

This product does well with a load on the truck. Without a load the ride is more like a chuck wagon. Terribly Rough. Would not purchase this item again.

Just installed the timbrens. Installation went pretty well but haven’t had a chance to put them to a load test. Dealing with etrailer was great as always. All the items show up as promised and I really like the installation videos.
4 stars because I haven’t tried them yet.

1988 Ford F-250 Super Duty

These are fantastic if you're only occasionally hauling heavier loads. The difference towing or hauling a truck full of firewood is amazing. My rear springs are pretty beat up (88 F250) and these really help with that lean that would be inevitable when loading up with anything more than a bag of cement.

That being said because my rear springs are pretty shot, so I don't have the recommended space between these and my axle. Instead of feeling every bump in the road, now I feel it 2 or 3 times each. Even with new shocks, you feel the hard hit when the axle hits them, then when the body rebounds and lands on them again. Just something to consider, these aren't a cheap fix for bad springs.

Your last sentence says it all. this product is meant to be used on vehicles with suspensions that are in good repair.

by:
1996 Ford F-150

Took the rear end sag out of a ½ ton pickup with a popup camper in the back. The ride was tight but not harsh. It also took most of the sway out of cornering.
I suggest installing the rubber spring on the mounting plate first before attaching the mounting plate to the vehicle frame. There is precious little room to tighten the mounting nut if you attempt to install the spring after the mounting plate is bolted on.

Ford F-250 Super Duty

The "Timbren's" was one of the best things I did to the F-350 SWR to improve the ride and handling while pulling a 3 horse goose-neck horse trailer with living quarters. Follow the instruction and they are easy to install in a short time. I liked them so much that I put them on my F-250 also.

After a year it was still the best improvement I have made to the trucks. The Timbren Vehicle Suspension is something I should have installed long from the beginning. The ride is a little more stiff when empty, but thats not why the system was purchased for. Saved me from buying a $500 air bag system. I would recommend this product to anyone who hauls heavy loads.

by:
2002 Ford F-250 Super Duty

I just put them on and it's great when all the parts fit like they are supposed too.
Very basic and simple.
Can't wait to haul my 1st heavy load.

by:
2003 Ford F-250

Product was a Timbren suspension enhancement set. The product installed easily and raised the flatbed of my F 250 about two inches.
The truck is a service truck with way too much weight on it. While installing the kit, I discovered that the truck appears to have a sprung frame. I may have to repurpose the vehicle, but will leave this kit on the truck. On a test drive, the truck handles better and is more stable than it was previously. The product is a good addition to my truck. From order to receipt of product was only about 5 days. That was quick enough for me. Thank you for the service.

by:
2003 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Product arrived faster than expected. I didn’t need the spacer with 2” bolts on my 2003 f250 so I set them to the side to deal with the parts actually needed. Directions were fine although I would prefer the installation picture and fastener specifics on the same page to avoid always flipping page over. Drivers side was a breeze but passenger side had to be cut with a grinder before timbren install. I’m guessing 30-45 minutes for total job. They really take out the rear sag while loaded. Coupled with Bilstein 5100’s, the ride unloaded is fine with me as the shocks are pretty firm in their own right. Seems to be a great product so far and you can’t beat the price. Really enjoy doing business with etrailer!

by:
2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Watch the YouTube video for your truck first. Super easy to install! My gooseneck trailer hooked up doesn't even touch my 2001 Ford F250 factory auxiliary springs with the Timbren installed. I have not gone on an extended road trip yet with these springs

by:
2010 Ford F-250 Super Duty

I bought this product as recommended by etrailer and I am very satisfied with it. The product arrived as scheduled and it was fairly easy to install. The hardest part was removing the stock stop blocks. It is well designed and the fit was perfect. I pull a 10,000lb 5th wheel with an F250 and it gives me peace of mind knowing that these will provide the support I need as the load increases. Great product!

by:

Shipping was quick, Instructions were good and installation was easy. It's going to be another month before the Timbrens get tested but if they work as well as most reviews say I'll add another star. I hope so because etrailer had the lowest price I could find but they were still expensive

by:
2002 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty

Simple design; work great. Just as effective as extra overload springs at a fraction of the cost. This is my second 3/4 ton I have put these on. The first was 14 yrs ago; with nary a problem.

by:

This product exceeded all my expectations, was not to happy with the explanation of the question I had on the product it seemed like it was being read from the product guide meaning that I could not get a straight answer to my question so I took a risk and bought it and luckily it worked out.

by:

etrailer was easy to order from, and provided excellent tech support on finding the right parts to fit my truck. They provide installation videos right on there product page, no hunting thru 20 different pages or websites. They shipped promptly and I got exactly what I ordered. I will use etrailer again!

There are a few different options for an airless suspension enhancement system for your 2003 Ford F-250. The SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs - Rear Axle # SSR-114-54 referenced in your question is a great option. The sturdy springs will cushion bumps and help support a heavy load to level your truck.
