Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

The kit did exactly what I was hoping and helped to level out the rear of the truck (2016 long-bed, 2x4, Frontier) when towing my 24'camper trailer. Installation was straight forward with the most difficult aspects being removal of existing rubber axil bump stocks

by:
2014 Nissan Frontier

Prompt delivery with good communication as regards order. Installation was straightforward as per instructions although I didn't use the included 3/8" x 5 1/2" carriage bolts for the lower bracket. Purchased 3/8 " x 3" Grade 8 bolts which did not require shortening and were easier to work with for clearance of brake line &etc. Air lines and connections worked great and No Leaks! Currently running 10# pressure but have not tested with a heavy load as of yet.

Thanks

Air bags have performed as designed with no issues for a year. Additional weight handled well and general ride and handling improved. Upgraded to E Series tires and Bilstein shocks and truck works well on and offroad.

Mounting plates thin couldnt torque to spec as they would bend. Bags kept leaking down.

I reached out to Firestone about this. They said the recommended spec to torque to is 32 ft lbs. These plates are very robust. Would you be able to send a picture showing what you are seeing? If there is a leak, could you spray soapy water on the site so that it bubbles and that way you can get a picture to send.

Great system, wish I’d done it sooner!

I have purchased a few items for my 2020 Fontier e.g. tow package, wiring, electric brake control, fog lights/switch, etc. - it's a 'tweener' year i.e. new power train with old style body. This Firestone Airbag recommended by etrailer.com is NOT a bolt on product for the 2020 Nissan Frontier. The driver's side rear is the issue where with the new power train there is a cannister - not sure exactly what it is...but, it interfears with the hardware. After cutting, fabbing spacers, adjusting brake lines I got it installed - took me two 14 hour days. When it was finally installed after a lot of headsctatching and figuring out how to solve yet another problem - I felt like Firestone should have paid me for all the hassle.

For 2020 Nissan Frontiers we do have a tech tip that this system only fits models that do not have the evap carbon canister on the driver side by the rear axle. Unfortunately there is not a work around for it.

by:

Easier install for me by removing rear wheels for better access.

by:

I had to grind a little metal off the lip on the upper brackets on each side so it would fit snugly on center on the leaf springs over the center over the rear axle. Otherwise the installation went well and I am totally satisfied with how well it improves handling and leveling the load when I put my wife’s Yamaha Kodiak in the back of my Nissan Frontier and my Honda Rubicon on the small trailer that I pull behind loaded with coolers & gear. I’m very happy with how they work. It doesn’t even feel like I’m pulling the trailer!

by:

I tried the stupid ass Sumo Springs first. They were junk compared to these... if you want a smooth ride you lower the pressure if you want a rougher ride or carry more weight in the bed go higher.

by:

Looked all over for this your company was the only one I could find that had it. Ordering was easy and I received the package quickly.

I love it, I have landscaping so I have hauling dirt and rock. I put some extra air in the shocks and I have a smooth ride home.

by:

Got for my RV, the installation was easy, I followed instructions and boom, works great. Have not had any issues.

by:
2018 Nissan Frontier

The ride rite air bags are great. They make a huge difference. The ONLY reason I only gave 4 stars due to installation on the 2018 Frontier. I found the drivers side bag cannot sit straight over the axle due to the mounting hardware interferes with the brake lines. The u bolt on the front and back drivers side actually sit against the brake lines and this causes you to not be able to push the upper bracket forward or backward. BUT they do work and make a huge difference in ride quality when under a load or not.

by:

the kit fit really well in my truck and when i load my truck i jus put a little pressure in the bag and ready

Great product

This has been a game changer from pulling trailers to loading tools for work. Would definitely buy again.

by:
2007 Nissan Frontier

Easy to install and worked as expected.
We towed a 2 axle trailer with this 65 Bug from California to Tennessee with no issues.

by:

Would have given 5 stars BUT, the carriage bolts are way too long on the bottom brackets. I had to cut them way down, if you don’t they would put a lot of pressure on the brake lines if you can even get the nut past the brake lines. Other than that, great product!

by:
Nissan Frontier

This is my 3rd set. I have a truck camper that fits on my Nissan Frontier and would not be without them. The only drawback is they ride a little stiff with no load. Great product!

by:

Good product. Does the job how intended.

2013 Nissan Frontier

Five star rating so far. Speed of delivery was awesome. Parts were exactly what is specified. Watched the installation video a couple of times prior to starting the install. I have a 2013 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab 4x4 so couldn't find exact match for video but the 2016 and 2017 installation video was pretty much the same. I did do one thing different from the video. I do not have a vehicle lift so I jacked it up and used jack stands and removed the tires. Seemed like that was the easier method than even a lift. No issues at all with install. Checked for leakage afterwards and everything was great. We'll see how it holds up now. Would definitely recommend this product as just about anyone with a basic set of tools can do the install themselves.

by:
2014 Nissan Frontier

The airbags bolted onto the frame and springs as expected.
Time will tell how they will last.

by:

The folks at etrailer are the best. These Ride-Rite helper springs are just what I needed. I towed the camper this week and it has never towed better. I also made some adjustments to my wds with guidance from the pro’s at etrailer. The combination of the two was perfect and I didn’t feel like the camper was pulling me around. They do take a little time to install and we made one slight modification by adding a T so one nozzle to fill and both springs have same pressure. Excellent product.

by:

What a piece of junk! It takes a special cutting device to cut the hose without leaks. You only get one chance to hook it up otherwise the fitting is damaged. It leaked from day one. I threw mine away. Does not deserve even 1 star.

by:

Customer service is amazing. Had some problems with a part I ordered. Within 20 minutes new parts were on the way. Parts are amazing quality. Worked out perfectly. thank you for the help.

by:

Install was straight forward with the videos on etrailer. I installed them to level out my truck while towing my camper. It made the ride alot softer and enjoyable

by:

The bags work great as designed and marketed. Much easier to pull my travel trailer now. Only draw back is the truck is even more nose down, so now I'm saving to level the front up. Very pleased with the service I got. Bought one thing over the phone and when scheduling, the fellow figured out it wasn't exactly what i had in mind.

2018 Nissan Frontier

Installed on 2018 Frontier 4x4.. DS top mount kinda hokey. A little ear was put on to stop interference with brake lines causing plate not to sit flat.. Bump stops are metal reinforced and aren't so easy to cut...lol... Air connections are awesome, easy and work well.. Love the control of rear suspension. Once installed a very nice system....

  • Can the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs Be Used Off-Road On a 2018 Nissan Frontier
The suspension travel on your 2018 Nissan Frontier SV will not be great enough to create any issues for the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2558 which are a confirmed fit. You are also correct that the Daystar Cradles are used mainly for lifted vehicle applications and will not be needed on your stock height Nissan Frontier.

The Firestone Ride Right Suspension kit part # F2558 that you referenced is a fit for your 2013 Nissan Frontier if the axle is the same distance from the frame as stock. That means that if you only did a block lift (body lift) you would not need spacers. If you have a 2 inch suspension lift as well you would need the part # F2366 which is a 2 inch spacer kit.

In regards to the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2558 which are a fit for a 2014 Nissan Frontier Pro 4X, you will indeed need to use a spacer if the vehicle has been lifted in the rear. If the vehicle has been lifted 2.5" then you will need to use a 2" spacer, the Lift Spacers for Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2366. There isn't a 2.5" spacer available so you'll want to use the 2" spacer instead of the 3" spacer which allows the air bags to do more of the work.

Yes, Firestone airbags such as the # F2558 you have installed on your 2019 Nissan Frontier can support the weight of the wheels and axle. This is due to Firestone using a roll crimp that holds the endplate to the rubber. With that said, if you'll be leaving the truck like that for an extended period of time like a day or two, I'd still go ahead and use jackstands to support the weight of the axle anyways, but that's more of a personal preference.
