I am only using this to lift 150-200 lbs, taking a topper off and on my truck. It works great, but I switched the loop for a hex drive. A bit of warning, I managed to burn up the motor on a $200 Ridgid 18V drill. For some reason I didn't have issues with my cheaper Ridgid drill, but still something to be aware of.

I purchased two of the DL10954 units to hang a Kayak and Paddleboard above my vehicle in my garage.
The units were heavy duty, much more than I expected.
I have added some pictures of my installation. Now anyone in the family can lower them and get to them when needed.

Thanks Mark

A great hand winch. I’m using two, one to llift a lawn roller and the other to lift a lawn aerator into the rafters in the garage when not in use to open up some floor space. I swapped out the loop drive for the hex drive to speed up the lifting process. They have no problems lifting either of these lawn tools because neither weighs more than 100 lbs. one concern I have is that there is no way to secure the cable to the drum. The instructions show 3holes in the drum to loop the cable through and back onto itself. The drums I have have only one hole. Running the cable over itself seems to be working, but I would feel more confident if it was secured better. Rather than just friction holding the cable in.

We are using it as a winch on our FIRST robotics robot. Super product. The staff was extremely helpful in answering questions about the product specs that were not on the spec sheet so we cold see if it was useable for our robot. Works perfectly! Thank yo etrailer!

  • Ceiling Hoist to Help Lower 100 lb Canopy onto Truck
We have solutions to what you are looking for but the # 317-330600 was not designed to suspend items in the air and then slowly lower like you are wanting. What would be your most ideal solution would be a ceiling hoist like the part # DL10954. You'd need a cable like the part # DL24104 as well.

  • Recommended Replacement Hoist Winch for Shore Station
To replace the brake winch on your Shore Station. I recommend looking at the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL10954, which is designed more for hoisting/lifting a load like what it looks like you are needing. This winch has a weight capacity of 1,500 pounds and features laminated high carbon steel gears that are heat treated for a longer lifespan. You can also use a standard brake winch like the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14934 that has a 1,200 pound capacity, just keep in mind...

  • Are You Able To Use Synthetic Rope On The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10954?
Yes, you are able to use a Synthetic Rope # BDW20095 rather than the Steel Cable # DL24104 on the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10954. The image below shows how the line needs to be routed on the drum of the winch.

  • Replacement for Shelby Winch Used To Lift PWC
For starters, the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake part # DL14996 cannot be used to hoist objects in the air which it sounds like you are trying to do. If that is the case then you would instead want to use a worm gear winch, the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL10954. In regards to comparing a wheel style and level style action, we do not have any conversion kits for this nor would I be able to recommend any retro fit advice. I recommend you use a standard style level action...

  • Worm Gear Winch Recommendation for Hoisting a 150 lb Float
Based on what you are doing I would recommend you use a Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL10954. Worm gear winches are great for hoisting things because the load cannot reverse the direction of the winch and there is no free wheel option. Check out the review video for this product for you. For a cable I would recommend you get a Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook # DL24100.

  • Winch Recommendation for Use as a Ceiling Hoist for Car Engine
Only worm gear winches should be used for hoisting thing like car engines as they are the only ones rated or that. For a winch the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL10954 would work great as it has more than enough capacity. It also can be mounted to the ceiling to allow the winch to hoist the engine easier.

The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10976 will have the split reel and it is also rated for 2,000lbs while the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10954 is only rated for 1,500lbs. The split reel design will allows for simultaneous operation of two lines from opposite directions giving more versatility. It is not to be used for raising one object and lowering at the same time. And you will not need to use both sides to use the split reel winch. Both winches will accept the Hex Shaft # DL406102...

  • Available Types of Electric and Hand Winches
Electric winches can require substantial battery power, but this will vary depending on the actual weight of the load. If you have access to your household AC power and an installation point that is protected from the elements you might prefer to avoid the battery and solar charger entirely with a winch like # DL25707. The long 50-foot cable on this winch might allow you more mounting options. If you find you prefer the simplicity of a non-electric hand winch you can spend a lot less and...

  • Winch Recommendation for Ceiling Hoist with Automatic Brake
For that application you will want a worm gear winch like the Dutton Lainson Ceiling Mount part # DL10954 this is the best and safest winch we offer that you can use as a ceiling hoist that automatically applies a "brake" when you stop cranking the winch. I attached a review video for this for you to check out as well. For a cable then you'd want the part # DL24104.

  • Winch Recommendation for Hoisting a Jeep Top to the Ceiling
Only one style of winch would I recommend for hoisting something from the ceiling. I recommend a worm gear winch, # DL10954, that you can mount on the ceiling and use an extension pole to turn the loop drive handle. Place this winch centered above where you would lift the top so you will not have to use pulley blocks to get a straight line pull. Worm gear winches will brake automatically if you release the handle which is nice. You will also need a secondary support system to actually...

  • What is the Best Winch To Use for Hoisting
Ideally, for hoisting, you would use a worm gear winch such as # DL10954 which you would mount on a ceiling and use a locally obtained rod and hook to turn the handle. A Heavy duty variable speed drill 1/2" shaft, using 5/8" socket, may speed up operation. A ratcheting winch will ratchet up and work well when there is limited space, but it will only ratchet in. When release it will just drop the load. A worm gear winch is the best option since it automatically will brake when the handle...

  • Hand Winch Recommendation to Hoist a Kayak Up to Garage Ceiling
Dutton Lainson hand winch # DL14125 could be used for hoisting up a kayak but because this winch does not have a brake to lower the load you would have to go into freewheel mode and the load will fall. There are different types of winches that are much better for this application. I recommend a worm gear winch, # DL10954, that you can mount on the ceiling and use an extension pole to turn the loop drive handle. Place this winch centered above where you would lift the kayak so you will...

  • Comparing Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winches For Lift System
Thanks for reaching out! Both the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winches # DL10950 and # DL10954 are made in the USA and rated for 1,500 lbs so it really boils down to whether you want option with the handle, part # DL10950, or the design that comes with the looped end, part # DL10954. Aside from that these are essentially the same winch and will work great for lifting 500 lbs. Attached are some review videos for you to check out.

  • Winch Recommendations for Lifting Canoes and Kayaks to Storage Position
For lifting and storing your canoes and kayaks, you will want to use either a worm gear or a brake winch. Worm gear and Brake winches, see links, prevent runaway loads, and do not have a free spool mode. The pulling winch you selected would not be the best choice for your application, because it could potentially release the load if not operated safely. I would recommend a worm gear winch for ease of operation. The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10950, or # DL10954, would be...

  • Best Type of Winch to Lift Truck Canopy
The type of winch to use for safely lifting your truck canopy is a worm gear winch. Worm gear winches are more powerful than ones that use planetary gears and with a worm gear winch the weight of the load cannot reverse the direction of pull. • Worm Gear Winch Recommendation for Use as a Ceiling Hoist
We have had this question before and our jack manufacturers don't rate their jacks for them to be used basically to retract weight as opposed to lift it. • If Handle of Worm Gear Winch is Let Go Does Winch Handle Move
Worm gear winches by design are brake winches so if you let go of the handle it hold the weight in the exact position. Since it's a screw that rides on a gear the release of the handle does not force the handle to move and it actually locks it in place. The lowest rated version of a worm gear winch is the part # DL10954 which has a 1,500 lb capacity and is already setup to be a ceiling hoist like you are wanting as well. I attached a review video for this for you to check out as well.

  • Ceiling Mount System for Creating Bed Lift
Using the Tow-Rax L-Track # TWSP18DTAB is an interesting idea, though I cannot recommend using any type of track system on your ceiling to use as anchors as they are not designed for that. What that means is they are not tested for use on ceilings and don't have a weight capacity so I can't guarantee this would work, or even be safe. The best option we can provide is a winch, the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - Ceiling Mount # DL10954 with Hand Winch Cable # DL24104. I have provided a dimensional...

Ratchet straps aren't designed for lifting. Their ratings are for the weight they can secure. Since they aren't setup for lifting it would be incredibly difficult to try and crank the ratchet if not totally impossible. For a winch the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL10954 would work great as it has more than enough capacity. It also can be mounted to the ceiling to allow the winch to hoist the weight easier.
