If you're replacing a busted or rusted-out spring on your trailer - or if you've decided to upgrade to dacromet to avoid rusted-out springs down the line - the first thing you'll need to do is measure your existing leaf springs. Take a look at the measurements above. If these dimensions - and the weight rating - match what you currently have, you should be good to go.

Remember, though, your leaf springs can flatten a bit over time. And if you're measuring your spring while your trailer is fully loaded, the overall length that you get might be a bit more than what you need a brand new, unloaded spring to measure.

Rustproof Your Trailer Suspension with Dacromet

Slipper Spring Dacromet

As you travel across highways and backroads, your trailer's leaf springs are going to corrode and flake over time. This is especially true if you have a boat trailer that's regularly submerged in water. Completely rusted-out springs on trailers are all too common, and these dacromet springs are a great solution to that problem.

Dacromet Versus Rusty Springs Comparison

Longer-lasting springs will save you money and are great for any trailer, but they are a must have for folks who live or play by the water. If you live on the coast, you're probably always rinsing the saltwater off of your trailer to try and keep rust at bay. If you're really worried, you might've even tried to repaint your springs or spray them down with rust inhibitors. But upgrading to these dacromet-coated leaf springs could cut down on or eliminate all of that maintenance, leaving you more time to spend out on the water.

Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. We conducted our own salt spray test and found that this dacromet coating lasts up to 744 hours before it begins to deteriorate. Compare that to some other dacromet coatings out there that are rated at just 300 hours - or zinc coatings that don't last for even that long - and you can be sure these springs will last.

Slipper Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Slipper Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

  • Is There Normally Play In Rear Hanger of Slipper Springs
Slipper springs do have a looser connection on the rear of them based on how they are designed. I am not sure exactly where the extra half inch of movement is that you referenced but if it's a vertical movement that's pretty standard. If you can get me the width of your springs, the length, and the axle capacity I can recommend you the best option we have! I attached a link to a page that has all of the slipper springs we carry as well. You need to select your axle capacity first, and...

The 4-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Open Eye End for 4,300-lb Trailer Axles - 26-1/4inch Long Item # e33SR that you referenced does not require an additional bushing for the hook end to attach to the rear hanger. The hook end of the spring will rest on the spring bolt and the only bushing needed is on the eye side of the leaf spring.

  • Can Slipper Spring Replace Existing Double Eye Leaf Spring
You could replace a double-eye leaf spring with a slipper spring like the # e33SR spring you'd looked at, but it's recommended that you remove the existing rear hanger (assuming it's a single axle trailer) with a rear hanger like # 115706S as your existing rear hanger isn't designed for use with slipper springs. You'll also want to choose a spring with sufficient capacity to handle the weight of the boat and trailer. You can choose a higher rated spring than your existing one, but be aware...

  • Replacement Leaf Spring Recommendation for 26 Long Leaf Spring on 3,750 lb Axle
The 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 26" Long # e48SR is a good replacement for your boat trailer as it meets all of the specs and is compatible with an axle that's just a little higher when it comes to weight rating. Please note that what you do to one side of the axle you need to do to the other so you'll need 2 of these leaf springs.

  • Availability of C Hook Leaf Spring for Caulkins Boat Trailer
Since you have a C hook type spring you really need to replace it with another C hook unless you are okay with replacing all of the spring components. We only have one c hook spring as of right now part # e33SR, but it has a 4,100 lb axle capacity and is 26-1/4 inches in length. If having a slightly lower capacity spring is okay then this should work otherwise.

All of our trailer leaf springs are displayed on the linked page. These include both types, double-eye springs like # e59SR and slipper springs like # e33SR. You can use the filters on the page to select the type you need. Springs should be selected based on the axle weight rating AND the spring dimensions, both width and length. You can refer to the linked articles for help in selecting appropriate springs for your trailer. Do note that very well-worn springs can become elongated from...

  • Can a Single Axle Boat Trailer Be Switched From a Slipper Spring Suspension to Double Eye
To switch to a Double Eye Spring # e48SR you would need to also change out your Rear Hanger # 30-20 since you will be adding Shackles # K71-358-00. This is required since the rear hanger has to be 1-3/4" wide on the outer versus at least 1-3/4" wide on the inner like you get with a Slipper Spring Hanger # CES83FR for a Slipper Spring # e33SR.

  • Is It Normal For Open Eye Spring To Hit Frame Of Trailer When Loaded?
Thanks for the picture! The spring shouldn't hit the frame like yours does in the picture, so the correct solution would be to either add a longer front hanger or using a shorter spring. The correct replacement hanger will be dependent on the width of your spring. If you have a 1-3/4" wide spring the longest hanger we offer is the CE Smith Front Hanger Bracket for Trailer Slipper Springs # CE14016G which is 2-1/4" tall. If you can tell me the width of your current spring and the height...

They have 5-leafs instead of your 3 but will work just fine on your boat trailer if your current springs are 2" wide. The closet springs we have that are only 1-3/4" wide are the 4-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Open Eye End for 4,300-lb Trailer Axles item # e33SR. These are 26-1/4" long.

  • How to Determine Correct Replacement Slipper Springs
I can help you determine how to figure out the right replacement slipper springs, though I'm not 100% certain what you mean by "where can I find how much space or clearance is required." I think you are asking if there is a standard amount a slipper spring will elongate over time, and the answer is unfortunately no, as it all depends on the amount of weight on the spring, the amount of time it was used, the quality of the spring, etc. I would take into account an inch or so of your slipper...

  • Should Trailer Leaf Springs Have Shackles on Front and Back
Hey Richard, so yeah having shackles on the front and back of the leaf spring would be incorrect by normal standards and I think would potentially be dangerous as it would allow the axle to move forward and back independent of the trailer and would pretty easily cause sway. Since most likely the hangers are the same height and are at an odd spacing I would go ahead and replace the hangers and shackles with a kit like the part # APS4. I don't know your axle capacity though so to pick out...

  • Replacing Slipper Springs on 1990 EZ Loader Boat Trailer With 3500 Axle
As they wear, leaf springs tend to flatten out. The first step is to get the correct length of the existing springs. I'd recommend getting that measurement, then getting back with me with the measurement you get.
