Video Transcript for Curt Raw Finish Hitch Ball Review

Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the CURT Ball. So this is a two and five sixteenth inch ball. So one thing you wanna make sure of, is make sure that your coupler is gonna accept this two and five sixteenths inch size, and basically, usually, they are on the coupler itself, so just look on your coupler, it should say it. If it's an older coupler, just make sure it's the right size before you grab the ball. But another thing you wanna think about is the component that is gonna be working with. Obviously, we wanna make sure our vehicle can handle the weight, our hitch can handle the weight, but the ball mount as well.

So with the CURT, we have a 30,000 pound gross trailer weight, and that is gonna give us a max tongue weight of about 3000 pounds. Another thing you need to look at whenever you're looking at balls, is the Ball Mount, is the shank size. So with this shank size, it's about an inch and a quarter in diameter so whatever Ball Mount that you pick, make sure that the hole is gonna be that size, nothing bigger, nothing smaller. Smaller won't fit, and bigger there's gonna be too much play there. But this one is gonna have a shank, which is about two and five eighths inches long.

So it's gonna accept the even thicker ball mounts like this one so from three eighths seven inch, all the way up to an inch thick, this is gonna be a one-piece raw steel machine ball. So one, it looks good, but it's one massive piece they basically to seal and seal this whole entire thing out of a big block of metal. So you know it's gonna be extra, extra strong. A nice thing about this shank is it has really, really fine threads, meaning they're really, really close together. So it's gonna take a couple more rotations to get it locked down into place, but it's gonna make it sure that it's nice and tight.

It comes with the lock, washer, it comes with the big old nut. I do not have a socket or a wrench this size, but it is an inch and seven eighths, so you do wanna torque it down with a torque wrench and you are gonna need to grab an inch and seven eighth socket or wrench to get that all done. To sum it all up, when it comes to hitch balls, there isn't a whole lot of differences, you just wanna make sure that the size is right for your trailer, you wanna make sure that it's gonna be strong enough to hold the weight of your trailer and that goes for all the other components that you pair with it. So you can find all of that on our website. So let's make sure that you pair them all up correctly so you can stay nice and safe.

The limitation to your whole entire setup is gonna be the lowest capacity of whatever component has that low capacity, so just be really careful and mindful of that just to keep you safe, your equipment safe, and everybody else on the road. And that's pretty much it for a look at the CURT two and five sixteenth inch trailer ball..

Wanted a HD ball for the car hauler. It’s rated more than my hauler but I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t going to be the weak link. This thing looks strong and rugged. Appears to be milled and should last me forever.

I just opened up my new Class 5 Curt XD hitch and have not yet installed it so my comments are based on first impressions only. It is very heavy duty - and heavy at 40 lbs. - made of extremely thick metal and outfitted with quality Grade 8 bolts with square necks so they won’t turn when torquing on the nuts to attach the main tube to the side mounting plates. My bolts are plated yellow (which I like) rather than silver as you may have seen in some online photographs. It is substantially beefier than my existing Grade 4 hitch and superior in every way. It’s an impressive piece of hardware. I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with it on specifications, quality, strength, and general appearance. It’s a beast. What I AM disappointed in is Curt’s packaging and the condition in which the hitch arrived. (This is NOT a reflection on etrailer.com as the hitch arrived in Curt’s original packaging.) The unassembled main tube and the two side mounting plates come bundled together with nothing separating them but shrink wrap. No cardboard, plastic, even paper coming between the metal surfaces - just shrinkwrap probably not even a couple of mils thick. With basically metal-to-metal contact in an oversized-box with the bundle jostling around, it would be a miracle if there were no scratches, gouges, or some type of damage to at least one piece, which is exactly what happened to my hitch. The main hitch tube, on the exterior facing plane, on the driver side where I’ll see it every day, has some gouges on it that go through the powder-coating to bare metal. I can - and will - paint them to prevent rust (and, therefore, have to paint the whole hitch to match). But the gouges will still be noticeable as they go through the thicker, pebbly, powder-coat finish and will undoubtedly still appear as depressions in the surface even once painted. I fully realize this kind of surface damage will almost certainly happen with regular usage of the hitch anyway and that it’s certifiable to demand absolute perfection in anything. But if you are someone who cares about the aesthetics of your equipment and keeping it looking new for as long as possible, it is very disappointing to receive such an expensive and prominent piece of hardware damaged right out of the box and requiring immediate repainting. The plastic parts bag had also ripped open in transit, with nuts, bolts, shims, etc. rattling around in the box. I am dumbfounded that Curt packages such a high-quality piece of equipment so shoddily where such damage is virtually unavoidable. I bought from Curt solely due to their being an American manufacturer and to support American workers so this is doubly discouraging. It’s a trivial complaint in the big scheme of things and not worth demanding a replacement over. Just be aware that unless Curt changes their packaging practices it is very possible you will have the wind taken out of your towing project sails just as I have. Again, this in no way reflects on etrailer. My experience to date with etrailer (website, educational resources, staff reviews, ordering, tracking, email contact, etc.) has been beyond exemplary in every way. They rank as a Top Five online retailer in my opinion, maybe even the best.

A great deal. Well used with my new 14k dump trailer and working great!

amazing customer service and shipping times!!! Not to mention, the lowest prices available. Thank you!

Great product info ahead of purchase and very quick delivery. [
Product quality is top shelf. would buy again but won’t need to. This thing will last forever!!

The product I purchased, a 2-5/16" hitch 30,000 lbs ball, is very nice quality. I was very impressed. I had looked locally for a similar product, but was only able to find a hitch ball for about twice as much cost.
As to the service from etrailer, I was equally impressed. Soon after I ordered the product, I recieved a personal email expressing thanks for the purchase. While I realize this may have been an automatic "canned" response, I got the feeling there was custormer interest and I could respond in email if I wished. Thank you. I will continue to order all my trailer and hitch needs from etrailer.

Curt makes quality hitches

by:

The ball is fine. But, the nut is 1 7/8, and is supposed to be torqued to 450 foot pounds.

Who has a wrench that big? Not me. Nor my local Ace Hardware.

I asked Etrailer.com if they would torque on the ball to the hitch that I ordered at the same time. They told me "no", they didn't have a wrench that big - !

So, I ordered a socket and a 35 inch breaker bar from amazon - for $70 - more than my new hitch and ball costs. At least shipping is free.

Etrailer.com has lousy service/product support.

Thomas, thank you for your review. Yes, the ball does need to be torqued to 450 lbs. If you do not have a torque wrench that will torque that much weight most mechanic shops will let you rent one or torque the ball for you for a small fee.

After doing a bit of research I found I was towing with an undersized ball and ball mount. The information for this product helped me get the correct ball and mount for my trailer with correct weight rating and drop to safely tow my trailer. Product is heavy duty and has performed as expected.

Great mount, excellent quality and price, we ours to move a 34ft rigid inflatable boat on a dual axle trailer (GTW 8,500lbs) around South Florida. Never a problem and choice and service from etrailer couldn't be easier-thanks!

So the customer service is fantastic. I ordered the BWX2000 and it showed up missing the shank. It was not etrailer’s fault as the shipment initially contained everything but the carrier messed up and the package didn’t arrive with the shank. I spoke to autumn in customer service and she did absolutely everything she could to get me the 2.5 inch shank I needed but ended up sending me the 2in receiver by mistake. Again I wasn’t upset because I did not specify and by the time I realized it was wrong the part was already on the way. Long story short I got the 2 in shank in the next day, this shank would work but it was not exactly for the load I wanted to safely pull. Anyway I ended up finding the correct shank, ordered it and it is one the way. Now I will have both the 2 and 2.5 in shank for the same distro hitch but guess what I am completely fine with it backside I have two trucks, each with different receivers so for just a little bit more I can use this hitch for both my trucks just fine. Everything happens for a reason and I was completely happy with how autumn helped me out. She was great and called me back several times to let me know what both she was trying to do and get assistance from several of her techs. Thank you and I will certainly do business with autumn and etrailer again. Autumn was really nice to me and did everything she could to help me out. Thanks again. Jason

Ball is perfect. 3" hitch on the other hand is loose as a goose with about an .125 of play up and down and side to side. Quite disappointing but I wrapped it with tape.

I do have another solution for you to help minimize movement of the Curt ball mount part # C45431 in the receiver. The Blue Ox Immobilizer part # BLU85QR is great for 3 inch receivers.

Great price, awesome communication. I received emails ., they called to let me know my order was being shipped out and if I needed anything else. I wish more companies took the time and responded like them. Thank you.

by:

The fit and finish is excellent again I haven't towed with it but I'm sure it's flawless love the products over there at each trailer great stuff have not been disappointed yet

by:

Perfect for what we're looking for! Great price too

I ordered the 30000 lb. ball hitch for a gooseneck on my 01 F250 super duty. It arrived at the time that e trailer said it would. I was able to choose the way the item was shipped which saved me money over other online options. I just put it in since it was a raw Steel ball I hit it with a coat of flat black enamel to keep the rusting to a minimum. It is installed and ready to pull. I don't have a gooseneck trailer but now if I need to pull a rental or a friends I can. I like doing business with places directly like e trailer and cutting out the big box places that are not easy to communicate with if there is a problem. There wasn't any which is even better.

by:

Nice finish , well manufactured 30,000 trailer ball . i just wanted to have a strong trailer ball , no weak links . I have two of these trailer balls , when I received the first one I thought " wow , nicely manufactured and nice finish " so ... I have one for each hitch , a load transfer torsion hitch and just a regular hitch .

by:

Great price and 30k pound hitch that looks great as well. Still have not figured out how you torque it to 450ftlbs, but I will get it tight. It does not have flats on the ball side to hold tight. Will work great as the replacement gooseneck ball on my flatbed. Great prices and shipping is reasonable and fairly fast on all products. Will buy from Etrailers and tell others whenever they are looking for parts.

by:

I recently bought parts to replace a 30K lb stolen equalizing hitch. As I still had the half of the components, my best path was buy replacement parts including shank, hitch pin, hitch base and ball with all hardware. This saved me $100+ over buying a whole new hitch system. The quality of the hardware and rapid delivery (around Christmas) from etrailer was excellent.

Very nice hitch ball, looks to be very well built! Will add to this post if its not as advertised. But think I shouldn't have any problems with it feels really heavy duty and read for the biggest of pulling jobs!!!

Thanks for checking in, yeah great product, have had no problems and am using it to pull stuff all the time!

It's just a 2 5/16" trailer ball, right? Well, no, not exactly; it's a dead-serious, well-engineered piece of equipment that, if it fails catastrophically will ruin your day! These folks offer primo items like this for fair prices and, unless you're desperate for it and can't wait, doesn't rip you off for shipping the thing to your door. I'm just a guy with a truck and a travel trailer but each time I've bought stuff from these fine folks I've got what I thought I'd ordered with absolutely no surprises, so I give them just what they deserve: 5 stars!

  • Parts Needed to Tow Destination Trailer with 2021 Ram 3500 and TorkLift Everest WDH
Yes. In order to bumper tow a trailer of that size and use a TorkLift Everest system like the # TLWD1000 you'll need to remove the factory hitch and install a dual receiver like the TorkLift SuperHitch Magnum Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class V - 2-1/2" and 2" # TLD1111-30. This dual hitch receiver provides the support needed to tow a trailer with that tongue weight and GVWR.
