Video Transcript for Tow-Rax Aluminum Storage Cabinet Review

Randy: Hey, guys. Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at a storage shelf from Tow-Rax. Basically this is going to be an all aluminum storage system. Mounts directly to an enclosed trailer like we're using it for here. But we also see these used a lot in shops.

We see them used a lot in garages, or even in basements at houses, just to help organize everything, keep it up off the table. So as you walk by, you're not knocking something over or something like that. You'll notice we're going to have three different shelves. We've got our upper shelf here. That's going to fit two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten quarts of oil very well.Down here on our middle shelf.. You can see it's kind of a tuck-in.

We'll give you the dimensions on all of them in just a few minutes to make sure it's going to work for you. Then down here, we've got our lower shelf. Now, I like the size of this one. It's just about perfect for a standard size aerosol can. Kind of a tight squeeze on our brake fluid there. But keeps everything from moving around too much.

Keeps them from bouncing around and making a lot of noise. Then we also have what I would call a lighter duty work bench or table here. Maybe you've got some paperwork or something that you need to fill out. This would be a great solution for that. You can see once it comes down and makes contact with the base there, it's pretty sturdy, but I certainly wouldn't be putting bearings on here and try to drive them out or anything like that. If you just had to maybe rebuild a wheel cylinder, tap a part out that wasn't too heavy, I think it would be excellent.

But certainly not heavy-duty mechanical stuff on there. You're not going to do much there without bending it or flexing it. Then that'll just store up and out of the way for us. A little plunger there pushes it in and it's going to secure it. Pull that out. That's going to allow it to come down. There's also a rubber gasket here that meets up with this upper portion so we don't have any rattling as we're going down the road or we're walking around in here. We don't have any of that annoying noise. Then on the bottom, you can see these are kind of narrower type of just paper towels that we had. But shop towels and things like that'll fit on here really well and allow you to pull those down and take just what you need. Now, if your rolls do get wider than that, you'll see the larger washers here. It's actually a spring between them that'll keep a little bit of tension on it. So if you're using like a regular paper towel or even the standard shop towels, those should fill up that gap, give you a little bit of pressure on them and keep them from unrolling as you travel. Now, Tow-Rax has another good option if this isn't going to fit your bill, exactly. Let's say you don't particularly need the working surface or you don't need the towel holders there, but you want to store some larger items. They've got one available. It's close to the same size. A little different in size, but the bottom comes out 9". In that case, you can actually put full-sized bottles of antifreeze in here long-ways to give you larger item containment. This one's going to be about a quart of oil. This is our largest shelf up here, and about a quart of oil is about as deep as it's going to get.So good options. Both of them are made out of the same material. Very good quality, very good looks, but just kind of meant for different applications. So if this one doesn't fit the bill for you, I think that one would be a good option. Now let's take a minute to go over some dimensions. This is going to be pretty important when determining if it's going to fit in the area you have in mind. So from our mounting surface to the outer most edge, we're looking at about 5-1/2" there. At its widest point here at the front, it's 25-3/4. Our total height is going to be about 30-1/4, 30-3/8.On all three of our shelves, the inside usable portion, it's going to be right at 25". Our top shelf. Going to give us about 4-1/2" worth of depth. Middle shelf is going to be about 3-1/2. And our bottom shelf here is going to be about 2-3/4. Now as far as our working surface, it's going to be about 14-3/4 of an inch by about 24-3/4.Well guys, I think you've got a pretty good idea if this is going to be the one that's going to work for you or not, but let's take a look at the installation process. It's really easy, really straightforward and something that we certainly do at home. Now if I was to mount this just about anywhere we want. It doesn't come with any pre-drilled holes or any holes for mounting. It allows you to customize it. We're going to be going in our enclosed trailer and its main support braces on the wall are 16" on center. So what I've done, I measured the box inside to inside here. It's basically 25".So I came off 4-1/2" on each side to get us right down to the 16. I marked my two locations. I've got one here. I've got one here. I'm going to be using #12 self tapping screws. We're going to put these in four locations. Put a couple up here, then a couple down on the bottom to keep everything nice and secure. I'm going to drill these out first. I know a self tapping screw will cut through there, but as nice as this is and as good as it looks, I want to keep it that way. So I'm going to drill these holes out first so I don't have any walking or anything like that. All right. We've got our two holes laid out where we want them. So now I'm just going to go mock it up in position. I'm going to use a marker to mark the two hole locations on my wall. I'm going to drill a little pilot hole. That's just going to make that self-tapper go in a little bit more easily. Now we're just going to bring our shelf in, get our holes lined up, and get our self tappers in place. All right. That should hold it in place. Now we can just go down to the bottom, do the two down there and be ready to get it loaded up and put it to work. All right. Once I've found my location there, just mark that off. I'm going to measure up a couple inches from there, pre drill my holes and get my self tappers in that location.Overall guys, I think this is a really nice solution. It looks so good. You know, having it set up in your trailer, having that aluminum finish, or even in your garage or your basement. I think it's going to be something that looks nice. Not just something that just kind of is functional, it also has a little bit of appeal to it. I think you'll be really happy, especially if you're in kind of this area. What did we say. 10 bottles of oil. I think we had about the same. Looks like 9 aerosol cans here. So it gives us a lot of storage opportunity. Allows us to get that stuff just up and out of the way so we're not fumbling with it or knocking it over.
