Perhaps the simplest type of heat exchanger, the tube-fin effectively cools a variety of automotive systems. The concept is simple: Fluid cools as it travels through the core by transferring heat out to the fins. The fins then provide the surface area necessary for sufficient heat exchange to take place, allowing the heat pulled from the fluid to dissipate into the surrounding air. The result is longer-lasting oil and a better-functioning engine.

The spin-on adapter in this kit allows for the external oil lines necessary to install an engine cooler by converting your vehicle's oil-filter landing into a passageway. Because the adapter mounts where your filter normally is, you will have to use the mount provided to move your oil filter to another location.

It has been 1 year now. Here is the story.

Dodge
Ram 1500 5.7 w/3.92 gears.

Oil temp at speed with no trailer: 224
Oil temp at speed with Springdale Mini RV: 240 (backed off at that point….it would have kept climbing)

After the install:

Oil temp at speed with no trailer: 200ish.
With trailer 210-220

Before I did this, I had to keep it at 55 in the expressway to keep my oil from turning into charcoal. Now I can drive normally. Only at the hottest part of the summer on a long grade did I ever brake 230 and it cooled right back off at the top of the hill.

Also holds about another quart of fluid which I like from a wear/tear perspective.

Even if the temp wasn’t an issue this kit would be worth it to move the oil filter to a non-retarded spot. I opted to go with the frame on the right side. Can change filter from side if wheel is turned. Very nice.

Before I bought this, I read some reports about oil leaks. It took some time but this fate befell me as well. The oil filter adapter plate is not well designed and the fittings leak no matter what. I fixed it twice and spent $1200 having dealerships fix it twice. I eventually cut the hose to the adapter, hooked them together and put an OEM oil filter back on. Wish I had never even tried. What a mess....What a pain...what a waste of money and time. If you have a RAM and you are overheating your oil, buy a bigger truck. That is what I am going to do. No more half measures. F350 time.

My vehicle is a 2010 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi 4x4. Overall product is great, those Conti hoses are awesome and little hard to get on lol but only issue I had I couldn’t retain my factory mopar oil filter which isn’t a big deal I got a WIX filter that fit. Thanks for quick shipping and great product! Will be buying a transmission cooler from you soon!

by:

Installed this on my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland with the hemi as the oil temp was heating up while towing. The install was not fun as I had to remove the front fender, grill and under body shield. Had to relocate oil filter to driver side and as a result, ran out of hose and had go out to buy more. Wish there was a few more feet. I placed oil cooler in front of radiator.

Once installed, oil cooler has worked great as I regularly go off-roading and camping towing a 6k pound trailer. Oil temps stay 20-30 degrees cooler making a huge difference when towing. No issues with the oil cooler after a year of use. Has been a great product, I would recommend it.

by:

To start I gave the product a good rating only because the kit put together by Derale came with the wrong barb fittings. I called Derale directly and they sent out the right fittings. I have not installed the kit yet but it is well made in the USA. If the kit would of came with the proper barb fitting definitely would of got a excellent rating.

by:

Product was exactly as advertised. Product was shipped quickly, very happy with service.

Installed this product on my 2013 Ram 5.7 Hemi. Install was simple and straight forward. I hoped there would be improvements in the operating temperature of my engine oil, which there was. Now towing my trailer is no worry about engine oil temp. This cooler works exactly as advertised, and the temp never go above 220. An unexpected result was better gas mileage by almost 2 additional miles per gallon. Also the truck runs much quieter than before and smoother. This noticed by my wife who rides with me always. So I would defiantly call this a win win install and purchase.

by:

I purchased this kit 1 year ago for an 08 Toyota Highlander V6 Sport. The vehicle had a small (and I mean small) trans cooler already installed with the sport, but adding this additional cooler gives us the piece of mind an confidence that when either towing or evening just sitting in temps up to 116F at the drive through in SoCal during summer hours, my family will stay cool. The fans run less and the whole vehicle runs a bit cooler as well. I have verified this with 3rd party OBD readers, actively watching oil temps both at normal operating temps, hill climbs, towing, and when sitting in extreme heat. IT DOESNT BUDGE! I dont have enough good things to say about this cooler. If youve ever thought about it, you should do it. Very easy to install and it flat out works.

by:

It doesn't fit my car even though the website said it would. I had already installed the radiator component before i found the filter adapter didn't fit so i couldn't return the product.

by:

just what i needed easy install nice quality

by:

This is a quality product and performs great. Installed on a 2012 Toyota Tacoma and had to have some machine work accomplished and a change from the original oil filter. Installation was straight forward after those issues were resolved.

by:

Easy to install but make sure you use quality thread tape. Check for leakage after 300 miles of driving. Then check again.

by:

Great product. Easy installation.

by:

Happy to find a system with the adapter. Mounted to my 4runner very easily. Not much confidence in the plastic mounting method will make something else.

by:

Doesn't take long to install.

by:

Bill is very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. Good fella, I can't comment on the product yet because I haven't installed it yet. Thanks Jesse

  • Value of Installing a Power Steering Cooler on 2005 Honda Odyssey That Will Not be Used to Tow
There is almost always a value in reducing the operating temperatures of the fluids in a vehicle. This is particularly true when it will bear the burden of towing, but it remains true for vehicles like yours that will not tow a trailer. The climate in your area may also play a role in determining the merits of a power steering, oil or transmission fluid cooler. In areas with high outside temperatures, fluid coolers are often considered essential by many drivers. I have included a link to...

Thanks for asking about a Power Steering Cooler and Engine Oil cooler for your 2007 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6. Adding two more coolers is not going to present a cooling issue for your engine/radiator. The coolers allow air to flow through them and will not transfer enough heat to the air going through them to effect the cooling performance of the vehicle's radiator. Your engine oil filter has 3/4-16 threads. So you can determine the correct threads to use from the recommended kits below,...

  • What is the Additional Oil Capacity from Adding Derale Oil Cooler # D15551
My contact at Derale advised that the approximate additional oil capacity resulting from the installation of their oil cooler # D15551 will be in the vicinity of 7 - 8 fluid ounces. This can vary depending on the length of the oil lines since some vehicles/installations may use all of the supplied hose while others do not. It is always best to check your dipstick to ensure you are operating your vehicle with the correct amount of engine oil.

  • Derale Oil Cooler that Fits 1999 Ford F-150 5.4 Liter
I did some checking and your 1999 ford f150 5.4l has oil filter threads that are M22x1.5 which means that for a cooler kit you'd want the # D15405 which includes a fitting that matches this size. The cooler that comes with this is a plate-fin style cooler which is incredibly efficient so it will do a great job keeping your oil as cool as possible. The cooler kit you mentioned does not have the correct fitting for your truck.

Based on my research the 1998 Fleetwood Bounder M-36S Class A RV with the Ford 460 engine is based on the Ford F-53 chassis. Coolers are not vehicle-speciofic; you can install as large a cooler as you have space to mount one. Coolers are also not fluid specific; the same cooler model can be used for engine oil and for transmission fluid or even power steering fluid. • Recommendation For Transmission/Engine Oil Cooler on 1995 Ford Ranger V6 Towing 2750 lb Trailer
An engine cooler and a transmission cooler are always good items to have on your vehicle when towing a trailer. Even though you mention the outside temperatures will be cold, the strain that towing a trailer will put on the engine and transmission of your vehicle will still increase the temperatures of the oil and fluid in your vehicle. The coolers will help keep those temperatures at their best operating levels for optimum life and performance of the engine and the transmission I recommend...
