Video Transcript for Review of Thule Replacement T2 Bike Carrier Locking Ratchet Arm Assembly - 752-1272-001

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Thule Replacement Locking Ratchet Arm Assembly. This is going to replace the locking ratchet arm assembly for your Thule T2 Bike Carriers. You can see the two different part numbers there on the screen, so if you have either one of those, this is gonna do a great job of replacing that original locking ratcheting arm for you. Because it is a direct replacement from Thule, you can trust it is going to fit right in place, give you that full functionality again, you're not gonna have to worry about compatibility issues or anything like that. And so, it is going to have this ratcheting arm that will allow you to tighten everything down, make sure your bike is nice and secured, we also have the locking cable here, so that we can get our bikes securely attached and not have to worry about someone coming along taking off with our bikes.

The lock core is sold separately, so it's not gonna come with a lock core, you might be able to reuse the original, make things easier for yourself. As you can see, we're only gonna have 1/2 of this cradle, so you'll need to reuse the hardware and everything from the original, but if you are just needing to replace that original ratchet arm assembly, this is gonna be exactly what you need. That completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com, thanks for watching..

I bought a mountain bike and my current thule ratchet arms on my bike rack did not fit over my bike's 29" wheels. Thankfully I found etrailer and all the helpful reviews that other people bought this arm to fit over their mountain bike tires. I bought one arm to test it out. It was super easy to install! I'm going to order an additional arm for my two bike rack and the thule lock core system to install as well! Thanks etrailer and everyone who left reviews! Very helpful all around and it helped me save money from buying a brand new bike rack! Thanks!!

by:

I recently purchased a 29" bike and unfortunately my older T2 bike carrier only accommodated up to 26" bikes. I purchased a replacement locking ratchet arm assembly for my T2 bike carrier from etrailer and the installation was a breeze (approx 30 minutes).

Last year I ordered a hitch for my truck from etrailer ( so did my Father) and I was just as pleased as I am now with the ordering process, product and installation process. Thank you etrailer!

by:

Works exactly as reported. Pretty easy to install, too. This ratcheting arm is about 1.5 inches longer than the previous version so it raises the support arm to allow clearance for fat 26 inch tires, or mid-fat 29ers. The old arm/ratchet system BARELY fit around a 45NRTH Dillinger 4.0 fat tire on a 26er, with pretty low pressure.

I didn't account for the fact the new arm also has the integrated cable lock system, so I had to order 2 matching core locks to take advantage of that functionality. I already have the arm locks, but two locks are better than one.

The pic is of a Niner ROS plus with 29x3.0 tires. Fits with room to spare.

by:

I bought this replacement arm to accommodate larger wheels like 29er. I use it primarily for my Fatbike with 4.8" tires.

by:

I believe your customer service communication is really, really superior to other companies. Solid follow-up before shipping, during, and post delivery. I would definnately recommend etrailer! Great Job and thanks for being a breath of fresh air in the Client Relations world!
FYI ... installed all the parts and my Thule T2 is back up and working as designed! Thank you etrailer my new retailor!

by:

Needed to upgrade my old T2 Classic for 29" bike. This replacement arm work perfectly!

by:

After a brief phone call, I was certain that I was going to receive the correct part. The two ratchet arms for my bike rack was exactly what I needed. Lauren was extremely helpful!!
Thanks again for your efforts

by:

Exactly what I needed to carry my 29+ bike and my Fat Bike. Very easy to change out and I was able to sell my stock arms. I will likely purchase 2 more because I have the 2 bike add on. Cable lock is a nice feature. It wouldn't stop a pro but will slow an opportunistic thief.

Great! I use this rack almost daily. Things that need improvement are the latch for lowering the rack - could be a smoother operation. Also, it would be nice if there was a retrofit to tighten the hitch into the receiver. As far as holding the bikes securely, Ive had no issue.

Glad to hear that you are getting good use out of your bike rack! Thule actually redesigned the T2 bike rack and made improvements to the tilting/folding mechanism as well as the anti-rattle device. You can find the various configurations at the link provided as well as review videos for each of the bike racks on their product pages.

Needed to replace the arms due to damage from theft, good price and easy to install, work great on existing Thule rack.

Working great. No problems.

by:

The quality of the product is well-made, and eTrailer service and pricing are excellent, however I can not recommend the Thule T2 Classic, or any version of this style bike carrier. After owning the T2 2-bike carrier, plus 2 bike extension for many years, the stress finally got to me, and I sold it to someone else.
The problem with these style bike racks is the further from the hitch, the more each bump in the road is exaggerated, and the whole rack reacts like a diving board, to the point the furthest bike was “bounced” out of the tray several times on road trips. Also, a simple google search reveals the many ways these racks are easily defeated and don’t actually secure the bikes at all.
I spent the money and bought a Recon Rack, which holds 6 bikes vertically, by the front wheel. Much larger rack, but more secure.
Again, etrailer is great, and I will continue to shop with them, but I can’t recommend the Thule T2 Rack, or any parts for it.

by:

Product looks great and delivery timely. I realized after examining the contents that all parts needed except....multiple replacement screws/bolts, washers and nuts were not included. Upon removal of those parts for I’m well worn bike rack none of them were functional and needed replaced. 6 pairs of the aforementioned parts would have been appreciated.

Thule lists all of their replacement parts individually. If you need the screws and nylon locknuts that attach the hook to the assembly, you would need the Replacement 10-32 x 1.5 Phillips Screw # 853-5972 and the Replacement 10-32 Nylon Locknut # 853-5973. For the bolts, washers, and clamp for the base of the arm assembly you would want the Replacement M8 x 1.25 x 25 mm Bolt # 853-5976, Replacement Washer # 951081654, and Replacement Bearing Clamp for Thule Sidearm # 753-3591 (no longer available). If there are other replacement parts you need just let us know!

by:

Seems to be a good product for an old rack. Installation was straight forward and took only a few minutes. Can't give 5 stars because for what you're getting, the cost is too high. It's cheaper than replacing your whole rack so you're kind of stuck buying this if you need new, longer arms.

Have an old SportsWorks Rack and I love it... built out of steel and like a tank. The ratcheting arms were wearing out after a decade of use. These replacement arms were just what I needed!

Hey Erich i was planning on also getting this part too for my sportworks t2 rack. Did you do any modification to make it fit the old rack?? Any info helps. Thanks in advance.Jeff

by:

This replacement worked perfectly on my Thule T2 hitch rack. A light pole unfortunately snuck up and ran into my rack damaging the ratchet arm. Found the replacement part with ease on etrailer's web site. Shipping was super fast and the installation took literally minutes. Saved the expense buying a new rack.

by:

I got arm assembly to squeeze some more life out of an old Sportworks rack. The rack was purchased by a family member in 2004. Amazingly, this part fits perfectly on the old rack. Thule knew a good design when they saw it and didn't change a thing for the ratchet arm assembly. The old mounting hardware mated perfectly with the new part. The old arm is still in great working order, however I needed extra length for the larger diameter 29er wheels I now ride. The price was great and worth the gamble to extend some life on a classic hitch rack. Note-you get exactly what is shown and mentioned in the part listing. If you need extra mounting hardware, a replacement hook or cylinder core locks, you'll have to order those separately.

by:

Purchased some replacement parts for my 10 year old T2 Thule rack and brought it back to life! New swing arms for 29in tires with locks and new bushings have made all the difference. Easy installation and replacement and quick turn around from etrailer.

by:

Upgraded my older Thule T2 Classic with the new arms (752-1272-001) so that my 29x2.6 wheels would fit securely. The upgraded arms installed easily, and my larger wheels now fit as intended. I also installed the lock cores (TH450400) so that I could use the arm locking mechanism and the included arm cable lock (there are two separate lock cores per arm). Super easy install.

by:

Replace shorter hold down arm on my Thule T2 rack with this longer one for 29" wheels. Works great but subject to the same issue that my shorter arms have - this is difficulty getting the button to release properly - often times you have to pry it up

by:

Arrived quickly and was easy to install. Now my old Thule T2 will fit my new 29” MTB.

by:

E-trailer was a pleasurable shopping experience, initially bought the wrong parts and had no problem with the exchange process. Great customer service with better than average product knowledge. Don’t waste your time at REI or the like. E-trailer will be my go-to from now on.

by:

The arms were very easy to install on the rack, turning it from a non-cable-locked 26" rack to a 29" cable-locked rack. I will say that the plastic covers (with the "Thule" stamp in the picture) feel looser than the old ones when not engaged with a bike. Overall I am happy because now I can hold a 29er without having to get a new rack.

by:

I bought the Replacement Locking Ratchet Arm Assembly for T2 Bike Carriers because I got a 29er MTB and the original arms weren't long enough to fit over my front tire. These fit well for my 29er and have done a great job over the last year. No complaints

by:

I upgraded my bikes from 26ers to 29ers.... So glad to be able to update my Thule bike rack with these parts with out having to buy a new rack!!! Great prices!!! Installation/replacement was a breeze!

by:

Fits the original T2, but you can tell the arm and ratchet mechanism are not as robust as the original equipment (Thule must have changed the parts when they released the T2 Pro). One of the arms (bought two) had a paint chip in it from shipping. Also, keep in mind this part does not include the clamp that fits over the bike wheel. That is a separate part.

by:

Bought this arm and the Thule Fatbike base. They both work great for Fatbikes even with 4.8" tires like mine. The base and arm are still great for hauling regular mountain bikes and road bikes.

  • Solution For Thule T2 Bike Rack When Arm Doesnt Want to Fit Over Tire After Fat Tire Adapter
I spoke to my contact at Thule and she informed me that the problem you described would indicate that you have the older style T2 bike rack (older than 2012) which was not designed for use with the fat tire adapter part # TH919, but can easily be made to work with the correct replacement part. All you need is the Replacement Locking Ratchet Arm part # 752-1272-001. This will replace what you currently have on your rack and will allow the arms of your rack to fit over the fat tires of your bike.

The Fat Tire Adapter Kit # TH919 and Locking Ratchet Arm Assembly # 752-1272-001 will work if you have the Thule T2 bike rack part TH917XTR or TH916XTR. There have been a few different models of the T2 bike rack so if you can verify that's what you have then you're good to go! If you have something else just let me know what the model number is and I can see if we have a replacement that will fit. I have attached a photo of the T2 that these parts fit for you to reference and compare with...

The longer arm that is offered for the original Thule T2 is the Replacement Lockable Ratchet Arm Assembly for Thule T2 Bike Racks item # 752-1272-001. It is 31-1/2 inches long overall which is about 2" longer than the original item # 753-3579. One of the features of the Replacement Locking Ratchet Arm Assembly for T2 Bike Carriers, # 752-1272-001, which you referenced, is the integrated cable lock which provides extra security for your bike. It retracts inside the upright post. You simply pull out the cable, and feed it through the frame of your bike. The cable comes back around into the plastic housing. A lock core secures the cable to the plastic housing. Check out the linked video which shows how this cable lock is used.

  • Why Doesnt Thule T2 Classic Come with Cable Locks
The Thule T2 Classic does not have a cable lock since the arms have locks built into them and the shank of the rack has a lock to secure it to the hitch of the vehicle. There is a replacement arm that will give you a cable lock though. For that we had a customer come back and state that the part # 752-1272-001 gave them the ability to use a cable lock.

I called my contact at Thule and explained the problem you said you were having with your fat bike. They told me that you may have an older model T2 bike carrier. We offer a replacement arm that is longer and is designed to fit bikes with a wheelbase up to 29 inches. You just need to order part # 752-1272-001. This will install on your T2 bike...

I have a better solution for...since installing the cable lock version of the # 752-1272-001 means removing the current lock setup of the arm; which prevents the arm from being raised in exchange for a cable lock I'd recommend the Thule Cable Lock for Hitch Pins part # TH538XT instead which replaces the hitch pin lock of your bike rack and gives you a cable lock additional to it that you could route through your bike frames for added security.
