Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2008 Toyota Tacoma

Today in our 2008 Toyota Tacoma, we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller, part number TK90160. Now, it is a proportional brake controller, which means it's going to automatically activate our trailer brakes with the same amount of pressure that our vehicle is slowing down. Since it is a proportional it's going to activate immediately and there's not going to be any pause like with time delayed brake controllers. It's going to feature three different boost settings if we push this button right here. We're going to have boost one, boost two and boost three. Each letting you adjust the initial braking power and aggressiveness. When we are at a stop light as well our brake controller's actually going to prevent the trailer brakes from overheating by reducing the power output to them during prolonged stops. It has this slider bar here, that's for the main override. more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 1996 Fleetwood Southwind

Today in our 1996 Fleetwood Southwind Motorhome, we'll be having a look at and installing the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller, part number 90195, in conjunction with the ETBC7 kit, to make our installation easier, part number ETBC7. This brake controller is proportional unit, which can control up to one to four axles of trailer brakes. This is an ideal solution for towing small trailers, all the way up to large trailers. Being a proportional brake controller, it'll give us the braking power relative to the braking power that's being applied in our motorhome, or our car that's doing the towing, so our trailer stops evenly and smoothly behind us. Now, this is equipped with three boost level settings, which gradually step-up the amount of power and initial force of the brakes being applied. So if we have a trailer that we've applied a bunch of weight to, when we pick up some supplies or added cargo to it, we find ourselves not being able to stop as quickly. We can press this button over here to the top right, and gradually increase the power. This brake controller is completely customizable. The bottom right here's or settings button, we press that. We can select our brake type, press okay. more

The proportional system helps to save wear and tear on your trailer and on your truck by giving us the braking force we need when we need it. In an emergency stop situations where we really stand on our brake very hard, we're going to get that braking force sent to our trailer. The proportional aspect of the controller allows it to do that. more

So here's what our brake controller looks like fully installed. Now this is a proportional brake controller, which means that it's going to apply the same amount of pressure and force to our trailer brakes at the same time that we're applying our brakes to our vehicle. What's really nice about it being a proportional brake controller is that when we're not moving, and we're not slowing down, say if we're at a stoplight, it's not going to apply any brakes to our trailer, saving our brakes on our trailer from wearing out prematurely. It's only going to apply our brakes when the internal sensor inside of our brake controller senses that we're slowing down. Now if we come to our arrow buttons over here, this is going to be for our gain control and our max power. more

Now how this is going to be different from most traditional brake controllers is this is going to be a three piece system, so it's going to be very versatile and you're going to be able to mount these almost wherever you want. Now this is a proportional brake controller. What that means is, it's going to activate our trailer brakes based on how hard we're activating our brakes in our vehicle and since it's not a timed delay, there's not going to be any pause or delays. In an emergency situation when we really have to step on our brakes, it's going to sense that and send power back to accordingly. The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 is a truly proportional brake controller, which allow us to control from one to four axles of electric trailer brakes. By being truly proportional it'll apply the brakes on your trailer in direct proportion to the amount that your towing vehicle's slowing down. If you're going down a hill you don't have to worry about false triggers being activated because the brake controller is not activated at all until you apply the brakes in your vehicle. When you apply the brakes it shows how much power is going to your trailer brakes. Now, as you hold the brakes for awhile it dials down the power so you don't have to worry about your magnetics on your trailer brakes becoming overheated and shorting out. more

Here's what this brake controller looks like once it's installed in the vehicle. This brake controller is going to do a good job of giving us power to our brakes on our trailer that's behind us. This one, we don't currently have it connected to a trailer so if we hit the manual override, you'll see it shows NC for no connection, but when connected it'll show you the power output that it's putting through to a trailer. Here on the side we've got this turn dial to adjust your gain level for the amount of power being sent back to the brakes on your trailer. Here on the top we've got this blue button and that's going to let you go through to your three boost levels so that you can adjust the amount of boost that's going to go back to the trailer brakes. This brake controller is nice and easy to use and it's going to do a great job of providing proportional braking power to the brakes on your trailer and it does that by the inertia sensor that it has inside. You're able to mount it from zero degrees all the way up to 90 degrees in the vertical plane. It will work with trailers that have one to four axles of brakes, so just about any size trailer that you may have, this will work well with is. A lot of our customers like that you can change the screen color, to select whatever you would like. Overall, this brake controller is just going to do a really good job of making sure that, whatever trailer you've got behind you, that you're going to have the braking power that you need. Right now, when we've got this read out right here, that lets us know that it's connected to a trailer, because there's a little image of a truck with a small trailer behind it.
