What Is Needed To Convert Surge Brakes To Electric Over Hydraulic On Tri-Axle Boat Trailer
Question:
I am looking to convert a surge brake triple axle boat trailer to electric over hydraulic. Trailer capacity is 15,000lbs. My tow vehicle is a 2015 GMC Denali with the intergrated trailer brake controller. Please tell me which unit you recommend and if it is compatible with my truck WITHOUT modifying the truck. Thanks!

The first thing you will want to do is make sure that the brake controller you have installed is compatible with electric-over-hydraulic brakes you plan on converting to on your tri-axle boat trailer. Many of the factory-installed brake controllers are for electric brakes only and would need to be replaced to be able to work with an EOH system.
I have attached a helpful article that explains what is needed to convert your system to an electric-over-hydraulic system.
If you want to let me know the specific parts on your trailer I would be happy to make some recommendations that will work for your application. We will need the brand and model number of the actuator on your trailer, the weight capacity of the axles on your trailer, the number of axles that will require brakes, the inner and outer bearing part numbers on your spindles, the grease seal part numbers on your hubs, and the bolt pattern of your original hub/wheel combination. The races for the bearings are furnished with the hub.
To get the bearing numbers you will need to remove the wheel and then take the bearings out to finds the numbers stamped on the side. I have attached a photo that shows where you can typically find these numbers.
If you cannot find the numbers you will need to use a precision instrument like a digital caliper to measure the locations on the spindle in the locations noted to be able to get the correct bearings and seals.
I have also attached a helpful article that explains trailer couplers you can take a look at.
