Replacing a Malfunctioning Integrated Brake Controller on a 2008 F-350

Question:

i have a 08-f350-6.4 diesel with a tow command built in controller. I am getting a trailer brake module fault every time I start up.I called the ford dealer and I was hoping that there was a recall on it because my warranty ran out I have 54K miles on it. Do you make a controller that would fit into the existing dash. The dealer tells me to bring it in and they will look at it$$$. thank you in advance

You can install an aftermarket brake controller on your truck, but there is not one available that will install in the dash of your vehicle. Ford does not allow the manufacturer of their OEM controller to produce an aftermarket version.

I would check all of the wiring, especially at the connector at the rear of the truck, before going to the dealer or purchasing a new brake controller. There is a possibility that a loose connection is causing your ITBC to malfunction.

If you decide to install an aftermarket controller the original controller will need to be unplugged to use the existing connector and wiring. Once the original is unplugged a fault code will register in the vehicles computer. This fault code can be removed by the dealer re-flashing the computer. Once the computer is re-flashed, without the original controller, it will no longer look for the controller and will not produce a fault. You may be able to re-set the computer yourself by removing the battery cable for at least 3 minutes and then re-installing it. This may or may not keep the fault code from returning.

I use the Tekonsha P-3, item # 90195 in my truck and it preforms very well and is easy to adjust. Towing a 24 foot Corn Pro car hauler with tilting bed and a 7500 pound tractor, the brakes on the trailer work smoothly and when the tractor is unloaded it is simple to adjust the power setting for the empty trailer. The wiring adapter, part # 3034-P will also be needed.
