Recommended Tire Chains for 2008 Chevrolet Suburban with 275/55-20 Tires

Question:

Im looking for a tire chain that would fit in my 08 Chevrolet Suburban LT 1500 5.3L 2 wheel drive. The owner manual doesnt recommend the use of tire chains in my car. What do you suggest? My tire size is 275/55/20. Do others suburban owners actually use chains in their car. Please let me know, I will greatly appreciate your assistance. I noticed that you sell cable tire chains that will fit my tire size, but do you recommend the use of the chains or not for my car. Whats your knowledge about this tire size and the way it would perform with my specific vehicle make and model. Will the chain be obstructed by any car parts like brake line, fender or bumper? Thanks!

Let me begin by saying that I cannot recommend anything that would contradict your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. I looked at the owners manual for your vehicle, and GM does indeed specifically prohibit using chains on vehicles using your tire size. Other Suburban owners certainly do use chains, but GM lists the prohibition for the larger tire sizes, like yours and the 265/65-18 tire size.

Typically, vehicle manufacturers will prohibit the use of tire chains because of limited clearance atop or to the inside of the vehicle wheels. A tire chain with a 'Class S' Designation won't extend more than 15mm past the inside of the tire, and would provide the most possible clearance of a normal-type chain.

If you click the provided link, you can see the Class S designated chains that are a fit for your tires. Of the chains shown, I'd recommend the Titan Chain # TC2327, as they'll be the easiest to install. If you decide to ignore the vehicle manufacturer's advice, please understand you'll be doing so at your own risk.

I think your best course of action would be to contact your dealer for some clarification, and to see if using a Class S rated chain would be acceptable.
