Do Locking Hitch Pins Have Weight Capacities

Question:

I am trying to find a good hitch pin such as part # BD580402. Do lock pins have a weight rating? I am pulling a 12,000lb trailer with a weight distribution hitch. If so what do you suggest I use? thanks!

Expert Reply:

Hitch pins do not have weigh capacities because they do not actually support any of the weight of the trailer. When there is 10-15% of the tongue weight of a trailer's total weight applying vertical force on the ball mount it actually is so bound up in the hitch that the hitch pin doesn't actually keep the ball mount in the hitch.

In your case it would be the 1,200 lbs of tongue weight on the ball mount that keeps it from sliding out of the hitch. So the part # BD580402 would do a great job as a locking hitch pin. I attached a review video for this lock for you to check out as well.
