Installation and Set-Up of Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller # 39510 in 1994 Nissan Pickup

Hi. I purchased a Tekonsha Voyager about 2 weeks ago, and I just got it installed on my 1994 Nissan pickup this past weekend. Everything is wired up according to this picture of yours http://www.etrailer.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/pics/q/u/qu6890_800.jpg The instructions say to set the Leveling Sensor first by: 1 Connecting the trailer. Bi-Colored Light should glow GREEN. - CHECK! 2 Set power knob A to maximum by fully rotating clockwise. - CHECK! 3 Depress tow vehicles brake pedal and hold. - CHECK! 4. Rotate the Level Knob E counter-clockwise towards the back of the control until the Bi-Colored Light starts to change colors from GREEN to RED - STOP! My Bi-Colored Light never changes colors from GREEN How do I get it to change colors? Is the unit malfunctioning? Next is Adjusting the Power to the Trailer Brakes: 1 Connect trailer to tow vehicle. - CHECK! 2. Set Power Knob A to 12 oclock position. - STOP! Where is the 12 oclock position? The Power Knob A does not have any markings on it. I pulled my trailer this weekend with the Power Knob A set to maximum by fully rotating clockwise, and the brakes never did lock-up.

The Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller # 39510 that you referenced does require you to install it carefully to ensure it is level and oriented to the direction of travel.

If you cannot get the bi-color light to go red then it could be due to damage, to the power being set at or near the minimum, or to a short on the brake circuit (the blue wire). You can inspect the trailer wiring to see if there is any evidence of worn or cracked insulation on the brake circuit; you will want to correct this before re-trying your installation.

Try pressing the manual override lever. If this causes the light to change to red then you know the controller is working and was possibly mis-wired to the brake light switch. The red wire to the controller should connect to the COLD side of the brake light switch, the one that passed current only when the pedal is pressed.

The linked instructions do note that not all trailer brakes will lock up; there are several factors that affect this, including adjustment of the brakes assemblies themselves. You might also refer to the linked video.

Please note that when the instructions refer to a 12-o-clock setting for the power knob they mean that the knob should be set so its marker is straight up like the 12 on a clock dial.

Do note that the Voyager brake controller does NOT have reverse polarity protection; this means that if the black and white (power and ground) wires were accidentally reversed, even momentarily, then the unit is damaged.

The Voyager is covered by a 5-year warranty so you might want to contact the retailer where you purchased the unit if you cannot correct the issue through troubleshooting.
