Recommended Cargo Carrier with High Ground Clearance

Question:

Hi I was considering a hitch mounted cargo carrier and was wondering what the ground clearance requirement is for a straight tube carrier like the Pilot 2894AT? I am concerned about situations where the road suddenly changes pitch such as entering a parking garage ramp.

The Surco 24 by 60 Cargo Carrier, part # 52018 has a straight shank, which means that the height at the back end would be the same at the height of the receiver. For the Toyota Venza, once a hitch is installed, the top of the receiver would fall just below the bottom of the rear fascia. Depending on the height from the ground to the bottom of a hitch receiver on your vehicle, this might present a problem.

If you are concerned about ground clearance, you could use the Pro Series 24 by 60 Cargo Carrier, part # 63153. This carrier features an angled shank, which would raise the carrier up 2-1/2 inches above the receiver, providing additional ground clearance. A light kit, part # 20174 for incandescent, or part # 98174LED for LED is also offered for the cargo carrier and is highly recommended if the carrier or its cargo obscure your tail lights. A functional 4-pole trailer connector is needed to power the light kit. If your Venza doesn't have a 4-pole trailer connector, you can install one using part # 118482.

You can see an installation video for the trailer connector by clicking the provided link.
