Weight Distribution for Livin Lite Axxess Toy Hauler Towed By 2014 Ram 4x4 With Air Suspension
Question:
I have a 2014 Ram 4x4 crew cab with air suspension. I will be towing Livin Lite 8.5 x 22 Axxess toy hauler.....so the weight will vary, depending on if I have one or two motorcycles in it......the bikes weigh between 750 and 850 lbs each. because of the airsuspension, some have recommended no adding a WD hitch........what do you think and if you recommend using a WD hitch, which one? the empty tongue weight is 650, the trailer empty weighs 4200 lbs. thanks!

Any time the fully loaded weight of the trailer is greater than half the weight of the tow vehicle, using weight distribution is recommended.
To choose a weight distribution system, you'll need to first determine the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. Since you have a toy hauler, your tongue weight will likely be heavier with only one bike on board. The idea is to determine the level at which the tongue weight is heaviest. To that figure, add the weight of any gear stowed in the bed of your truck bed behind the rear axle. I've linked to an FAQ article that explains how to do this. These combined figures equal the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your set-up. The TTW of your trailer should fall as close as possible to the middle of the effective range of the weight distribution system you choose.
Sometimes air suspensions and weight distribution systems can work against each other, but if you set everything up correctly, you shouldn't have any problems. First, use the bags to level the vehicle BEFORE the trailer is hitched. Then, you'd install and set up the W/D system according to the instructions.
If your TTW is between 500-1000 lbs, with 600 to 900 being the ideal, the Reese Steadi-Flex system you've looked at, part # RP66559 would be an excellent choice. The Reese is an outstanding system, providing weight distribution with proven sway control resistance. If your TTW is between 400-600 lbs, the lower rated # RP66558 would be a better choice for you. Both systems include the weight distributing shank, but the properly sized trailer ball is sold separately. For a 2 inch ball, use part # A-80 or for a 2-5/16 inch ball, use part # 19286.
