Trailer Running Lights Do Not Work When Towing with 2003 Honda Element

Question:

Product was easy to install and the turn and brake functions worked properly but the running lights on the trailer did not work. Fortunately I was driving during the day, but I really need to get the trailer lights working as well. Do you have any suggestions on why the running lights on the trailer did not come on? I have a 2003 Honda Element. Thanks!

All of the trailer wiring harnesses for the 2003 Honda Element (# 118336, # C55336, and # 43105) plug into the factory connection point on the vehicle. This makes me think that the issue could be a blown or missing fuse. Check the vehicle owners manual for the fuse locations for towing or trailering to see if any are blown or missing.

You can test the wiring harness by following the help article I have linked to the right. If everything checks out on the vehicle then it indicates a problem on the trailer side, likely a bad ground.

Ground problems normally show up when there is more draw on a system such as when you have the running lights on and then use another function like a turn signal or brake light.

Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.

The light grounds should also be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. If there is anything between a light ground and the metal trailer frame or if the trailer has an aluminum frame, tilt bed, or folding tongue, any of these things can interrupt the ground. Running jumper wires from the light grounds to the main trailer connector ground can help.
