Recommended Weight Distribution and Sway Control System for 3,405 Pound Lance Travel Trailer
Question:
I am buying a 2015 Lance 1685 travel trailer. Gross dry weight is 3405#. Hitch/tongue dry weight is 275. The dealer recommends a Husky Weight Distribution Husky Round Bar 800-1200# and Sway Control System with sway dampener. Is this system adequate? Are there better options? Is this system easy to use? Best regards

When choosing a weight distribution system you want to fall within the range of the trailer tongue weight the weight distribution system is rated for. With a tongue weight of 275 pounds, I would recommend a weight distribution system with a tongue weight capacity between 250 and 400 pounds. For this, we have the Reese Light Duty Weight Distribution System with Sway Control, part # 66557. This unit combines weight distribution with sway control, and it would be ideal for your application. We do not carry Husky weight distribution systems.
When loading the trailer, make sure you have an approximately 60 - 40 percent split, with 60 percent of the weight being in front of the axle. This will help minimize any sway that might occur. The weight distribution system does not really lighten the tongue weight, it transfers a portion of it from the rear axle of the tow vehicle to the front axle, evening out the ride height and reducing or eliminating the squat that you have been experiencing.
You will also need to purchase a hitch ball. For a 2 inch ball use part # 63845. For a 2-5/16 inch ball use # 63847.
I have linked two FAQ articles on weight distribution systems. I have also linked installation instructions of the Reese Light Duty Weight Distribution System with Sway Control.
