Weight Distribution With Sway Recommendation For 6 X 12 Scout Enclosed Trailer
Question:
Need a weight distribution hitch with Sway control for a Scout Trailer. How do I outfit for a trailer that will bounce between several tow vehicles. It is not a huge trailer at 6x12 with extra height, it does push the 1/2 ton trucks around on the highway. Do you have any suggestions? The primary tow vehicle is a 2011 suburban that I recently added your timbren helper springs to, but sway was still an issue at highway speeds with heavy cross wind.

There are 2 factors that are needed when determining what weight distribution system to choose. They are the GTW (Gross Trailer Weight), which is the weight of your fully-loaded ready-to-tow trailer. The other is tongue weight. That is the tongue weight of your trailer added to the weight of any cargo that is placed behind the rear axle of the towing vehicle. I have attached a helpful article that explains weight distribution you can check out.
From the information I was able to find on your 6 X 12 Scout trailer, it has a gross weight capacity near 3,000 lbs. I will make a recommendation based on that figure. After you have determined your tongue weight and trailer weight and find that it is a lot different, let me know and I can make some other recommendations that will work for you.
I recommend the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control, part # BXW0550. this system has a clamp-on installation and has a gross trailer weight capacity of 6,000 lbs with tongue weight capacity between 350 and 550 lbs. This system fits trailer hitches with a 2 inch receiver opening. The lift brackets will fit trailer frames up to 2-5/8 inches. I have attached a link to a product review video for this system you can take a look at.
