Upgrading Weight Capacity of Trunnion Spring Bars for Travel Trailer with 1200 Pound Tongue Weight
Question:
My trailer GVWR = 8600#, Tongue weight =1200# My current trunnion bars are rated at 1200# but when I set to level truck they bend which I understand is not good. I tried tilting ball back but still wont level truck. The only number I can find for head unit is TD11159 stamped on side. Should I upgrade to 1500# RP58359 bars and will present head unit be OK?

Expert Reply:
If your trunnion bars are bending you will definitely want to upgrade to the 1500 lbs bars, which you reference. Failure to do so could result in the bars breaking which could cause vehicle damage or serious personal injury.
Also if your tongue weight is above the rating for the spring bars the Weight Distribution system won't effectively distribute weight to the front axle.
You would use part # RP58369, and you would need two of the bars.
If you have a Reese head you should be able to use the same head with the upgraded bars.
