Location of Trailer Brake Controller Port on 2004 Toyota Tundra

Question:

I cannot locate the plug on my truck, at all 04 Tundras equiped with the factory plug? didnt know if the V6 made a difference. thanks

Your 2004 Toyota Tundra will have an under-dash connection port for a brake controller, such as the Tekonsha P2 # 90885, if it came from the factory equipped with a 7-way trailer socket at the back bumper. Not all Tundras were so equipped.

The photo I have linked for you shows the appearance of the Tekonsha harness # 3040-P connector that would plug into the under-dash port if it is present. Some times vehicle wiring may be tucked out of the way or taped to other items under the dash. If you can find a connector that looks like it would mate with the one on the harness you can test it to confirm that it is indeed a port for a brake controller.

All you need to do is apply a tester like # PTW2993 to each pin on the vehicle connector; you should detect a steady 12V signal at all times on one of the pins; on another you should detect voltage ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed. The other two should carry no voltage at all.

An alternative is to contact your local Toyota dealer with your VIN number; they will be able to tell how your truck was equipped from the factory.

If your Tundra does NOT have the factory tow package and has no under-dash port, you will just need to use a brake controller installation kit # ETBC7 whose installation is covered in the linked article and video. If the Tundra does not already have a 4-pole flat trailer connector you will also need one of these; I suggest Curt harness # C59236.
